A Message from Library Commissioner, Janes Sykes Wilson:
"Boulder really loves their library... In 2018, BPL served over 1 million patrons, and is consistently one of the busiest public spaces in Boulder, receiving more annual visits than Chautauqua, Boulder County Farmers Markets, or Boulder’s recreation centers.
However, funding has not kept pace with this increase of use. BPL is operating on 2002 funding levels... The Library is certainly doing more with less, but the question is for how long? Secure long-term funding is required in order to maintain the current high-quality service levels and to meet community goals such as operating costs for the new NoBo branch, to activate the Canyon Theatre, to reach out to Latinx community members, extend library services to Gunbarrel, and address deferred maintenance on all library buildings. By 2023, there is a projected shortfall of approx. $4 million per year..." Read Jane's Column...

Library Stories
"Since moving to the library, I’ve focused more on projects that offer some type of equalizing platform. Programs that bring people together around common topics, skills or interests, where everyone has something to share.
An example was the Art of Repair exhibition we did in 2017... Within the exhibition, people could find supplies to repair their own objects, and there was a station called Sew for a Stranger. We gathered damaged clothing from thrift stores (items that were going to be thrown away) and left them out on a rack for people to mend, along with some supplies. Once you finished mending, you left the garment on another rack for anyone to take. Sewing brought up such strong personal memories for people and sparked many spontaneous and meaningful connections. Mending circles formed, and strangers helped each other learn skills. I walked in one day and a woman was helping another patron repair his ripped sleeping bag. Would those people have connected otherwise?"

"Thanks again for putting the Ideastorm together! I honestly felt like I had a voice in my community for the first time in my life. I've always found anything public-service related to be remarkably inaccessible to a non-politician, and last night felt very welcoming. I'm excited to get involved!" -Tom, Boulder Resident
