MAY 2026

BRIDGE TRAFFIC AND TRANSIT RIDERSHIP UPDATE

Travel in the Golden Gate Corridor by Bridge, Bus, and Ferry remains well below pre-pandemic levels. Thankfully, overall travel in the Golden Gate Corridor continues to trend upward.
In April 2026, southbound Bridge traffic was about 2 percent below April 2025 traffic, Bus ridership was 8% below April 2025 ridership, and Ferry ridership was 7 percent above April 2025 ridership.
Today, during the morning southbound commute, Bridge traffic is still down about 25 percent compared to pre-pandemic traffic. Less Bridge traffic results in less toll funding available to operate the District’s bus and ferry service. Accordingly, staff are focused on reducing costs while providing first-class service for travelers in the Golden Gate Corridor.
April 2026 traffic and transit ridership statistics are below:

THE GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE TURNS 89

This May, the Golden Gate Bridge turned 89 years old! Tuesday, May 27, 2026, marked 89 years since the Golden Gate Bridge first opened to the public. To commemorate the Bridge's 89th anniversary, the District is highlighting how the Bridge has served as beacon of innovation for nine decades, from its inception to its modern history. Highlighted projects include being the first bridge in the country to convert to all electronic tolling, eliminating head-on collisions with the moveable median barrier, and saving lives at the Golden Gate Bridge with the Suicide Deterrent System. The District is proud to celebrate 89 years of innovation at the Golden Gate Bridge.

JULY 1 TOLL AND TRANSIT FARE INCREASES

Golden Gate Bridge tolls and Golden Gate Ferry and Transit fares will increase on Wednesday, July 1, 2026. The increases are part of the District's five-year toll and transit fare programs.
Golden Gate Bridge tolls will increase by $0.50 for most customers, and most regional Golden Gate Transit and Golden Gate Ferry transit fares will increase by $0.25. Discount transit fare programs will remain in effect for Clipper users, seniors, youth, persons with disabilities, and low-income riders who participate in the Clipper START program. Marin local bus fares and special event ferry fares will not increase.
The revenue generated through the toll and transit fare increases will allow the District to provide ongoing maintenance of the Golden Gate Bridge and continue Golden Gate bus and ferry transit service.
