The Creative Writing Workshop Hosted Visiting Poet Dana Gioia

The Creative Writing Workshop recently hosted visiting poet Dana Gioia who read from his extensive body of work.
Gioia has published six full-length collections of verse, including "Daily Horoscope" (1986), The Gods of Winter" (1991), "Interrogations at Noon" (2001, winner of the American Book Award), "Pity the Beautiful" (2012), "99 Poems: New & Selected" (2016, winner of the Poets’ Prize), and his just published new collection, "Meet Me at the Lighthouse" (2023), a collection dedicated to Gioia’s parents and ancestors, whom Gioia describes as “the unkillable poor,” from his working-class family of immigrants backwards to his great-grandfather, “a Mexican vaquero…shot dead at a tavern in Wyoming during a dispute over a bar tab.”

| US and Austrian Institutions Meet in New Orleans
|
Center Austria co-hosted the second meeting of US-Austrian institutions in New Orleans from March 15-17.
Presenters from academia, educational institutions, the embassy and the private sector met to discuss funding opportunities, ideas for cooperation and new approaches to student/faculty recruitment. The meeting was sponsored by the Dietrich Botstiber Foundation for Austrian American Studies.

| University of New Orleans Transportation Institute Awarded $13.5 million For Research
|
Researchers at the University of New Orleans Transportation Institute have received a $12 million, four-year federal grant for transit-oriented research and education conducted through the Center for Equitable Transit-Oriented Communities (CETOC).
In addition, the University received a $1.5 million federal grant to continue its maritime and multimodal transportation research and education conducted through the Maritime Transportation Research and Education Center (MarTREC).

Your contributions will enable UNO students to participate in an exciting simulation of United Nations activity involving thousands of students to be held in New York City in March. There, our many debating and resolution-writing sessions will culminate in a final meeting in the General Assembly Hall of the United Nations headquarters building itself.
Gifts will help fund airfare, lodging and conference costs to allow more students to attend this life-changing event.

Southern History Expert Spoke at UNO on Confederate Monuments and Racial Justice
|
Southern history expert and author Karen Cox gave a lecture on March 28 at the University of New Orleans Earl K. Long Library. Her book, "No Common Ground," explores the history of how and why Confederate monuments were built in light of the recent efforts to remove them from the southern landscape.
The lecture and book signing was sponsored by The Midlo Center for New Orleans Studies and Whitney Plantation Museum with Friends of the UNO Library and UNO's Justice Studies Ph.D. Program.

New Orleans Trumpeter Emily Mikesell Explores Her Love for Indie Pop on Smiloh's Genre-Bending 'Kaleidoscape'

Back in 2019, trumpeter Emily Mikesell '22 was offered a gig to play a three-hour slot with her own band at Siberia. A member of Trumpet Mafia, Mikesell had written her own music off and on for a few years and had been learning music-making software, so the Siberia gig gave her a challenge.

Wheat Ridge Announces New Community Development Director
|
Wheat Ridge announced Lauren Mikulak '10 is the new community development director. Mikulak has worked for the city since 2010, and since 2017 she has managed the planning division, overseeing all current and long-range planning efforts. She specializes in land use regulation, development review, plan implementation, project management, and process improvement. As the staff liaison to the Wheat Ridge Housing Authority, she oversaw the redevelopment of the historic Fruitdale School Lofts.
