As I reflect on my decade as CASL Dean I am reminded of the song “Time” by Pink Floyd; “And then one day you find ten years have got behind you. No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.” In many respects it truly feels as though the longer I served in this position, the more I felt as though I was just really getting started. But alas… I cannot tell you all how incredibly fortunate I am to have had the privilege of serving the college that helped to shape me into the person that I am today. It is almost incomprehensible to me how this transformation happened. Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined such a life path.
On Sunday, April 30, more than 1130 Dearborn Wolverines — along with their supporters — celebrated 1151 earned degrees. Among the people cheering for the newest UM-Dearborn alumni was keynote speaker and CASL alumnus Marc Howze, a 1986 graduate. The first in his family to go to college, Howze said UM-Dearborn changed his life. Read Howze's speech in its entirety here.
CASL student April Marvin, who graduated with a BA in communication spoke at the 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. ceremonies. See photos of the big day here or watch the recorded ceremonies on YouTube and Facebook.
Each commencement, UM-Dearborn honors a very select group of students with a medallion. Chosen by faculty from their respective colleges, graduates are recognized for their outstanding quality of character, vitality, intellect, integrity and academic record. Meet the College of Arts, Sciences, & Letters recipients!

Honoring Dean Marty Hershock and Professor Ron Stockton
This winter two endowed scholarships were established to honor a retired faculty member, Ron Stockton, and CASL's outgoing dean, Marty Hershock. Both of the scholarships were presented by alumni as surprises to their respective honorees. If you would like to honor one or both of these amazing people, click on these links to make an online gift. We will share the names of those who make gifts with Professor Stockton and Dean Hershock. Thank you!
If you have a memory, message, and/or photo you would like to share with Professor Stockton and/or Dean Hershock, please send it to Diane Gulyas, CASL Director of Development, at dmgul@umich.edu.
CASL Annual Fund Gifts Change Lives
Study abroad is an amazing opportunity for students to experience new and different cultures and countries. These are life changing experiences that will forever change their outlook on the world and better prepare them for living and working in a global environment. Gifts to the CASL Annual Fund help make it possible for students to participate in study abroad.
CASL students are currently participating in three faculty-led summer study abroad experiences: Italy: Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, Canada: Ottawa Political Internship, and Poland: Study Abroad. Click on the video below to hear from a past Ottawa Internship Program participant about how this "real-world" experience impacted her education.
Gifts to the CASL Annual Fund provide opportunities for students to experience a variety of programs such as study abroad!
