Our Conditions Assessment and Project Prioritization Report |
One Truckee River (OTR) is releasing a report and tool assessing environmental conditions along the Truckee River’s urban corridor. It can be used to determine priority project areas for riverbank repair projects to improve the healthy functioning of the river system.
In our latest blog, we sum up our findings and share our latest tool for evaluating how sections of the Truckee River Corridor could be improved.
Then, we take a closer look at a section of the Truckee River Path where a collaborative sustainable vegetation management project has already been conducted, reducing flood risk and bringing back native vegetation. To better understand the project’s results, we join Candace Stowell (the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony’s Director of Planning and Community Development) and Danielle Henderson (the Truckee River Flood Management Authority’s Natural Resources Manager and an OTR Board Member) for a tour. We chat with them about how the project unfolded, what successful coordination can look like, and how the space is currently maintained.
Keep reading to learn more about the report, its prioritization tools, our conversation
with Stowell and Henderson, and our thoughts on what’s next as we propel sustainable
vegetation management and riverbank repair forward for the Truckee River!

Effects on Truckee River Recreation, Including Paddling & Floating Trips |
The Regional Transportation Commission, in partnership with the City of Reno, is beginning construction on the Arlington Avenue Bridges Project to replace the two nearly century-old bridges that span the river across Wingfield Park in the heart of Downtown Reno. To safely construct the new bridges, Arlington Avenue is currently closed between West 1st Street and Island Avenue and will not reopen until summer 2026.
As part of the project, there will be safety improvements for pedestrians, bicyclists, transit riders, and drivers along the bridges. Construction will include roadway improvements, utility upgrades and relocations, and aesthetic enhancements.
Wingfield Park will remain closed throughout construction and river recreation detours will be in place. We recommend that you plan your kayaking, tubing, and whitewater rafting trips with these detours in mind. According to KOLO8, “the RTC encourages people who float the river to exit at or before Keystone Ave. The walking bridge on the northwest side of Wingfield Park will be open as an emergency exit. Barbara Bennett Park will remain open, but the project will have an impact on parking on Island Ave.”

Biggest Little Bee City, in partnership with the City of Reno Parks and Recreation Department, will be hosting a World Bee Day celebration on May 20th at Idlewild Park.
This family-friendly event aims to educate the community about the vital role of pollinators in our ecosystem and to promote practices that support their health and habitats - including mulching, native plants, and sustainable gardening practices!
This year's theme, "Bee inspired by nature to nourish us all", highlights the critical roles bees and other pollinators play in agrifood systems and the health of our planet's ecosystems. Indeed, pollinators are increasingly threatened by habitat loss, unsustainable agricultural practices, climate change and pollution. Their decline jeopardizes food production, increases costs and exacerbates food insecurity, particularly for rural communities.
Practices that are good for bees are also good for the Truckee River. Learn more about our River-Friendly Living practices. One Truckee River will have a table at World Bee Day 2025. We hope you stop by, pick up some free seeds, and let us know what excites you most about River-Friendly gardening!

Look for OTR on June 22nd! |
Join the UNR Extension and The Biggest Little Bee City USA for a fun and educational event exploring the beautiful world of pollinators! Our Northern Nevada Pollinator Garden Tour will take you on a journey through some of the public pollinator demonstration gardens in Reno, Carson City, Gardnerville and Minden, where you'll learn all about the important role that pollinators play in our ecosystem. Knowledgeable docents will be on hand in each garden to answer all your questions and provide tips for creating your own pollinator gardens.
Our favorite stop on the tour? Lake Park - where One Truckee River will be showing off the River-Friendly Living Demonstration Garden and talking about changes you can make in your own yard.
Don't miss out on this unique opportunity to connect with nature and learn more about the tiny creatures that make our world bloom! Many locations will also have fun activities for kids.
