50+ Reasons to Celebrate Citizenship

Here are a few of the 50 students who have passed their citizenship interviews this year!
The last week of April marked our 50th student of the year passing their citizenship interview!

One of the key reasons our citizenship students thrive is because of our amazing citizenship class teachers! We are thrilled to welcome three new volunteer citizenship class teachers this spring!  They all bring a great deal of enthusiasm to our program, in addition to their wealth of teaching experience.

Charlotte H. started volunteering with LVCA in September 2022 and has tutored ESOL and citizenship students with us. She enjoyed working with our student population so much that she has also been teaching ESOL classes at TJACE since 2023!

Linda P. is a retired elementary school teacher who has been volunteering with LVCA for almost four years. She has tutored ESOL and citizenship students, in addition to serving as a teacher for one of our conversation groups for the past 2 years.

Sue K. is a former high school English teacher who has been volunteering with LVCA since November 2020 – she survived one of our first (shaky!) attempts at conducting virtual new tutor training after COVID shut down our in-person tutor trainings. She has tutored both Basic Literacy and citizenship students during that time and is enjoying getting back to classroom teaching.

These three volunteers are all teaching sections of our civics class, where our students learn about history and government to prepare for the 100 civics questions which make up one part of the citizenship test. We are also thrilled to have two of our veteran citizenship class teachers, Nancy C. and Ali B., continuing with us and leading sections of our English for the Interview class. Ali started volunteering with us in January 2020 and Nancy has been volunteering with us since 2013 (you read that right!).

We are so grateful for two of our recent citizenship class volunteers who are moving on to new adventures. Loretta D. is graduating from UVA and heading to a new job in New York. She has volunteered with us since August 2022 as a tutor, citizenship class teacher and member of our Wordplay planning committee. Tulai R. found her way to us a year ago and after 6 months of tutoring, was eager to jump in with our citizenship classes as well. She is heading to law school this fall. Congratulations and best wishes to both Loretta and Tulai!

Our citizenship program is truly able to thrive because of the generosity of our wonderful team of volunteer teachers. Without their efforts, we would not be able to run multiple in-person and zoom sections of our classes and meet the needs of so many students.
