AI in Legal Practice & Learning
Wednesday February 18 | 12p-1p | 1400 18th Ave S Rm A2009
As AI takes on increasingly complex legal tasks, from contract drafting to case analysis, the legal profession is confronting new questions about which forms of expertise remain distinctively human. This shift also complicates how early-career lawyers gain the practical experience that was once built through performing routine tasks that are now increasingly handled by AI. In this talk, Mark Williams, founding co-director of Vanderbilt AI Law Lab (VAILL) will examine the dual impact of AI on professional legal services and legal education.
| |
Williams will highlight practical applications, challenges, and the evolving skillsets lawyers and legal educators must develop to maintain professional rigor, ethical standards, and practical fluency in an AI-augmented legal workplace. Join us Wednesday to learn more. Pizza and drinks provided.

Advancing Innovative Math Solutions (AIMS) EduData Initiative
Deadline: March 2, 2026
AIMS seeks to build sustainable and scalable research infrastructure to advance math learning. AIMS EduData especially encourages applications from graduate students and early career professionals, educators with research roles, such as those working in district research offices, and researchers located at minority serving institutions or Title I school districts. Successful applicants will conduct original research using datasets provided by leading digital learning platforms (DLPs) and participate in a growing community.

K-12 AI Infrastructure Program Grant RFP #1 - Formative Assessment
Deadline: March 8, 2026
Digital Promise, alongside core partners Learning Data Insights, DrivenData, Massive Data Institute at Georgetown University, and Catalyst @ Penn GSE, is pleased to announce the launch of the K-12 AI Infrastructure Program, a new multi-year initiative aiming to close the gap between scientific principles of teaching and learning and the promise of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI). Over the next four years, the $26 million program will issue grants to develop openly-shared datasets, models, benchmarks, and other digital public goods to advance the accuracy and relevance of AI in education. These outputs will be openly licensed for free use to improve the use of artificial intelligence for teaching and learning.

A Theory of Adaptive Scaffolding for LLM-Based Pedagogical Agents
LIVE researchers including Clayton Cohn, Surya Rayala, Dr. Namrata Srivastava, Joyce Horn Fonteles, Shruti Jain, Xinying Luo, Divya Mereddy, Naveeduddin Mohammed, and Dr. Gautam Biswas recently shared a new paper, A Theory of Adaptive Scaffolding for LLM-Based Pedagogical Agents, at the main technical track of the AAAI 2026 conference held in Singapore.
| | |
Inquizzitor is an LLM-based agent that integrates Evidence-Centered Design (ECD), Social Cognitive Theory (SCT), and Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) to grade formative assessments and deliver principled, adaptive scaffolding. In a classroom study of 104 middle schoolers, the scoring closely matched those of human experts, supporting theory-driven design as a practical way to improve real student–agent learning dialogues. The Association of the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) is one of the most prestigious AI conferences and has an acceptance rate of just over 10%.
