This month, Rooibos Limited officially launched a brand-new online store, called Shop Rooibos. The new e-commerce platform aims to be the first point of call for those looking to buy Rooibos and Rooibos related products. The store offers a range of Rooibos teas, beauty products that contain Rooibos and other goods that are made using Rooibos as an ingredient. According to Gerda de Wet, Communication Manager of Rooibos Limited, the company hopes to meet the ever-growing demand for online Rooibos sales with Shop Rooibos. Products ordered on Shop Rooibos can be collected from the House of Rooibos in Clanwilliam. However, customers can also opt to have their orders delivered to their address anywhere in South Africa. At the moment, Shop Rooibos does not ship internationally. International shipping will be rolling out soon, though, which will further help to establish Shop Rooibos as the global leader of online Rooibos sales.

In this newsletter, we showcase some of the products and features of this new e-commerce platform.

Shop Rooibos not only sells a large variety of Rooibos tea. Interesting and unique gifts that are made from or contain Rooibos are also on offer. The categories of products that are available on the website are set out below.

Cosmetics: Rooibos has many benefits for those who consume it. However, when Rooibos is used topically, it can help to rejuvenate and rehydrate the skin. Shop Rooibos sells some of the best skincare and beauty products that contain Rooibos as an ingredient.
Warm Tea: Of course, Shop Rooibos sells the traditional Rooibos tea we all know and love! However, there are many more Rooibos tea options on offer. Other products available are green Rooibos, flavoured Rooibos and Rooibos capsules which can be used in Nespresso machines.
Iced Tea: Easy, convenient and healthy, it is the perfect household staple for quenching a thirst on a hot day, while still getting all the benefits that Rooibos has to offer. Shop Rooibos offers a variety of Iced Teas. The sugar-free version is suitable for diabetics too.
Food: Rooibos can also be used in cooking and baking. Shop Rooibos sells Rooibos bars, Rooibos chutney, muffin mixes and sauces and spreads that are infused with Rooibos.
Miscellaneous: The online store furthermore has loads of Rooibos gifts and Rooibos curios on offer. These include Rooibos sunhats, recipe books and Rooibos tins.

Getting your order to you as soon as possible is a high priority at Shop Rooibos. As such, they have two delivery methods. The first option is that customers can collect their packages from House of Rooibos in Clanwilliam. However, for those not planning on visiting Clanwilliam, they have incorporated a courier option. With the courier option, customers can have their package delivered to any address in South Africa at a calculated fee. Delivery options are selected upon checkout.

There has been some speculation around whether South African products, such as Rooibos, will continue to enjoy Geographical Indicator (GI) status following the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union.

According to Dawie de Villiers, legal director for the SA Rooibos Council (SARC), the short answer is “yes”.

“By its inclusion in the Geographical Indication Protocol of the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) between the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) and the European Union (EU), Rooibos is currently protected as a GI in the EU. A GI links a product to a specific geographical area, which indicates the origin of where the product is produced, processed or prepared. This means that the word ‘Rooibos’ or ‘Red Bush’ can only be used for Rooibos tea imported from the winter rainfall areas of the Western and Northern Cape. This protection will last for as long as the EPA (or a successor agreement) remains in force.

“However, if Rooibos is to be included in the GI Register of the EU, it means that protection becomes permanent. The SARC, along with the Department of Trade and Industry (dti) has applied for inclusion of Rooibos in the GI EU Register and await approval from the EU Commission. Since the EU has already accepted Rooibos as a GI under the EPA, the Council does not foresee any complications.
