New Student Convocation Welcomes Incoming Toros
Hundreds of new students received a warm Toro welcome on Friday, Aug. 26, at the university’s annual New Student Convocation. CSUDH Alum’s Student Film Becomes Award-Winning Documentary When Johnny Gonzales was a student in CSUDH’s Television Arts program, the topic for his student film was an easy choice. An aspiring water photographer, he decided to focus his lens on his intrepid colleagues who spent their days in the ocean, shooting action shots of surfers and bodyboarders..

Toro Industry Days: Los Angeles Dodgers The program featured Toros employed by the Dodgers organization who discussed their workplace duties and the techniques they used to elevate themselves within the organization.

CSU Dominguez Hills Day at Dodger Stadium Thank you to all of our supporters for making our event at Dodger Stadium a success. We sold just under 2,500 tickets to the game and attendees were able to receive an exclusive CSUDH & Dodgers co-branded cap. We look forward to being at Dodger Stadium again next year!

P’Jae Compton (BS ’18) is one of the stars of HBO Max’s Sweet Life: Los Angeles. The reality series focuses on young Black adults who are LA natives, navigating through challenging life issues that stem from broken friendships, failed love affairs, and jealousy. P’Jae established himself as one of the show’s most popular cast members. He also owns a clothing store called His & Hers, as well running as the Lost Sound record label.

Dr. Anthony Culpepper (BS ’93) became Southwest College’s interim president. After receiving his doctorate in teaching from Pepperdine, he worked as a professor at the University of Laverne and Pepperdine University. Culpepper has served in leadership positions at Trident University, DeVry University, and Ashford University. He aspires to serve in his current role permanently and believes the skills he has gained over the last thirty years will "contribute to the success of Southwest."

Faith Egbuonu (BA ’14) is a Los Angeleno who hails originally from Nigeria. She joined Albuquerque, New Mexico’s KOAT Action 7 News team as a reporter in August 2022. Prior to KOAT-TV, Faith served as a news reporter and multimedia journalist in Southeast New Mexico. Faith got her start in television as a camera operator. She was later promoted to floor director, where she helmed the morning and afternoon newscasts.

Sarah Hersey (BS ’05) a 25-year life sciences veteran, joined Infinity BiologiX LLC d/b/a Sampled SMART Labs Board of Directors as its first Independent Director. Hersey is currently at Bristol Myers Squibb, serving as Vice President, Head of Translational Sciences and Diagnostics, where she leads a team that supported more than twenty drug approvals, top-line results and other key regulatory milestones in a single year during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Jovan Jacobs (MA ’05) was promoted to Associate Superintendent, Specialized Student Support/SELPA for the Pasadena Unified School District. Jacobs will be responsible for administering all programs and services for children with disabilities, leading cross-departmental strategic planning, improving standardized procedures and training for staff, strengthening collaborative partnerships with parents, and improving the organizational efficacy of the Special Education department.

Cornell Jenkins (BS ‘13) was recently hired by New York Jets cornerback Bryce Hall as his sports physicist. Jenkins was influenced by his mentor, Marv Marinovich, the NFL’s first strength and conditioning coach.

Dianne Sauco (BS ’12) was named as PIH Health’s Downey Hospital Chief Nursing Officer. Sauco will be responsible for executive oversight of the hospital's nursing practice and operations. She has been with PIH since 2004. Prior to this, she was a staff nurse at PIH Health Whittier Hospital. She brings two decades of nursing experience to her new role.

Itzel Meduri Soto (BA ’09) was featured on OCDE Newsroom and participated in a virtual forum, “Know My Name, Face, and Story; Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month.” The virtual event was linked with the Orange County Department of Education. After graduating from CSUDH, Soto pursued her MA and PhD at UC Irvine. She is currently an Associate Professor at Biola University.

Robert Suppelsa (BS ‘80/MBA ’81) was selected as the new Vice President of Administrative Services for El Camino College. Suppelsa previously served as the Vice President of Administrative Services at Los Angeles Harbor and West Colleges.

Frederic Einar Bloomquist (BA ’07) died on August 19. Fred possessed a superior intellect and a keen sense of humor. Friends and family gravitated to him for his wit, warmth, irreverence, and charm. A library clerk and bookbinder by trade, Bloomquist worked at both the Rand Corporation's research and Loyola Law School libraries. He enjoyed a great cup of coffee, a good martini, a fine watch, and a comfortable pair of sandals. A jazz aficionado and self-taught musician, Bloomquist enjoyed playing piano and was blessed with a silky singing voice. His taste in music was broad, ranging from jazz artists like Horace Silver and Charles Mingus to The English Beat.

Patricia Brown (MA ’71) passed away on August 5, just days after celebrating her 86th birthday with her family. While raising four children, she received her master's in English from CSUDH. She chose teaching as her career, and taught English and ESL throughout her life. Brown enjoyed reading mysteries, doing puzzles, sudoku, and playing bingo in the evening with friends. She raised show dogs most of her life. She loved doing genealogy research and traveled a great deal to pursue it, spending hours combing through archives and cemeteries. She was able to trace her family’s roots back to the early 1700s abroad.

Brenda Knepper (BA ’09) former CSUDH Director of Communications and Public Affairs, passed away on August 24. She was a Toro through and through: someone who didn’t give up easily and remained strong and determined until the end. In her time at CSUDH, she led the re-launch of the university’s alumni magazine, the establishment of the university’s social media presence, and the expansion of visual and content branding strategies. Knepper generously gave her time supporting students, serving as a judge of the Department of Art and Design’s annual senior portfolio showcase, supervising a CBAPP-AEG/LA Galaxy team of student interns, and serving on a Male Success Alliance advisory group. After her retirement in 2016, Knepper returned to CSUDH as an adjunct member in the Department of Art and Design. Prior to working at CSUDH, she held positions in the CSU Office of the Chancellor and Cal State Fullerton’s University Extended Education.

Sally Friday Martz (BA ’90) passed away on June 22 in Torrance, California. She was an upbeat, positive person who loved her family and her friends, and most of all, she loved to laugh. After raising her four children, she volunteered at Trinity Care Hospice. In addition to hospice work, she led bereavement groups, was in charge of the bereavement ministry, and served as a eucharistic minister at St. Lawrence Martyr Catholic Church. She continually came to the aid of people suffering from homelessness, poverty, and mental or physical illness. Martz enjoyed travelling with her husband and her life-long friends. They visited many places around the world, including the Caribbean, Europe, Alaska, Hawaii, and South Africa, where she participated in a medical mercy program.
