Quarter-Life Crises: Finding Yourself in College and Grad School
|
Do you often feel isolated, fearful of failure, and anxious about the personal or professional path you are on? You may be experiencing an identity crisis or quarter-life crisis, which is a completely natural response to significant life changes in one’s 20s or 30s. Here are some tips on coping from the New York Times article, What Psychologists Want Young Adults to Know:
- Take yourself seriously – prioritize and listen to your needs
- Be patient – acknowledge that finding contentment and purpose takes time
- Ask yourself what’s missing – those in identity crises often feel that they lack stability or meaning
-
Channel Yoda – try to stay calm amidst uncertainty and conflict
- Don’t be afraid to make a big change – young adulthood is one of the best times to make a life change
-
Know when to call your parents and when to call on yourself – explore your increased independence without forgetting that you have extra support when you need it
