Pseudo-3D Imaging on a budget: Introduction to Reflectance Transformation ImagingÂ
12-1:30pm | Watson Library, Room 400BÂ
Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI) is a photographic technique that creates a digital visualization of an object. RTI simulates how the appearance of an object changes as it is viewed with light from different angles. RTI visualizations are most commonly used in forensic science, art conservation, and archaeology, but they can be helpful in understanding any sort of object with fine features. Indeed, an RTI can reveal features of an object that are invisible to the naked eye. Nonetheless, an RTI visualization can be created using relatively affordable equipment and the software is free. In this workshop, you will learn the basics of creating an RTI using a variety of easily sourced equipment, including string, ball-bearings and Lego.Â

Arch 600: Daniel Libeskind and Late-Modern ArchitectureÂ
What does it mean to lead an architectural life well? To examine this question, this 3-credit Arch 600 seminar offers an in-depth inquiry into the early life, creative practice, and architectural pedagogy of architect and educator Daniel Libeskind (1946-present).
Using this seminal figure as a lens into post-war North Atlantic architecture and its educational practices reveals complex questions that underpin each week’s themes. Through lectures, readings, videos, and discussions, students will explore not only Libeskind but also related architects and academics, works, and crucial ideas across different sites (profession, creative practice, and schools). This seminar aims to enrich the students’ knowledge of their discipline as well as enliven their self-understanding as emerging professionals. If you are interested, please enroll. If you have questions, reach out to Dr. Peter Olshavsky (polshavsky@ku.edu).Â

🪵 The CLT Handbook
Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) is an innovative wood product that was introduced in the early 1990s in Austria and Germany and has been gaining popularity in residential and non-residential applications in Europe. The Research and Standards Subcommittee of the industry's CLT Steering Committee identified CLT as a great addition to the "wood product toolbox" and expects CLT to enhance the re-introduction of wood-based systems in applications such as 5- to 10-story buildings where heavy timber systems were used a century ago. Several manufacturers have started to produce CLT in North America, and their products have already been used in the construction of a number of buildings.
