Note from the Chair
EEES closed out the 2017-2018 academic year on a high note. Dr. Nicole Martinez was selected as the inaugural recipient of a major international award given by the International Commission on Radiological Protection. Dr. Brian Powell was appointed to a joint position with the Savannah River National Laboratory to advance research on environmental remediation and radioactive waste disposal.
A guest editorial published by Dr. Fred Molz in the journal Groundwater was among the 20 most frequently downloaded articles. And our annual Hydrogeology Symposium broke all previous attendance records with over 450 participants, 31 exhibitors, and 14 sponsors. EEES students continued to enjoy considerable success, racking up awards from the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, the Health Physics Society, the South Carolina Environmental Conference, and the National Association of Geoscience Teachers. Our May graduates are headed to jobs in consulting, industry, government, and several are headed to graduate school.
We will be losing one of our Biosystems Engineering faculty members this summer. Dr. Yi Zheng has accepted a position as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Grain Science and Industry at Kansas State University. We wish Dr. Zheng the best as he transitions to the Great Plains. A search for a new Biosystems faculty member will commence this fall.
We are recharging our batteries this summer as we gear up for another successful academic year starting in August. Please stop by if you find yourself in Clemson this summer.
