A View from the Board
The following is the latest in a series of monthly messages from the RVR Master Association Board, called “A View From the Board.” The messages summarize recent Board decisions and discussions, and are designed to bring RVR homeowners up to date on issues important to the community.

Dear RVR Homeowners,
RVR’s first 25 years have made us a highly desirable community in the Roaring Fork Valley. During our first quarter century, we grew and evolved mostly organically. If there was a strategic plan, I’m not aware of it. Fortunately, we’ve found ourselves in a very good place.
As we begin the next 25 years, the community needs a solid plan to keep RVR vibrant. That’s why the Board has made long-range and strategic planning a top priority.
This month’s “View From the Board” will bring you up to date on efforts to plan for a brighter future at RVR, and share with you where our planning is taking us.

Why Plan? Ask Noah: Many who know me say I’m a bit of a planning fanatic. It drives my wife crazy. I do little in life without a plan. Yes, I sometimes miss out on spontaneity, but I enjoy the planning process, and the pleasure of executing a well-crafted plan.
One of my favorite quotes: “Always plan ahead. It wasn’t raining when Noah built the ark.”
The Board and our management team are deeply committed to this sort of planning too. Recently, we wrapped up a series of four-hour sessions, designed to develop a strategic plan for RVR. We’re still finalizing some details and will be sharing the plan with you soon. It’s a vision for RVR – today and tomorrow.
The purpose of these strategic planning workshops is to set goals for the RVR Master Association, and develop a plan to achieve them. If I were to share one thing from our 12 hours of discussions it would be this: We want RVR homeowners to say, “RVR is a place we love to live.”

Keeping RVR a great place to live won’t happen by accident. At our strategic planning sessions, we set a number of goals, including:
  • Improving and increasing community involvement
  • Delivering excellent customer satisfaction, resulting in “Wow”
  • Maintaining aesthetics of RVR neighborhoods
  • Preserving and enhancing RVR amenities, facilities and programs
That last bullet is what the Long-Range Planning Committee is focused on.
At the Board’s request, the committee has begun working with the McMahon Group, a consultant we’ve retained to help RVR through the planning process. McMahon will be working hand-in-hand with the Long-Range Planning Committee to look at the Ranch House and its surrounding amenities, like the pool and tennis facilities. McMahon’s expertise, developed over 40 years in working with hundreds of communities and clubs, will guide the development of our plans.

Discovery Visit: Earlier this month, representatives from McMahon made their initial visit to RVR. They conducted an on-site review of existing facilities. This “discovery” visit is designed to help them understand the current state of our facilities and amenities.
They asked many probing questions, and brought up great ideas that never occurred to us. They want to know – and for good reason – what you think about our existing facilities and amenities. We’ve shared with them detailed responses from a survey we did last year, in which nearly half of RVR homeowners responded. But as we move forward, it’s important to validate and update what we’ve heard from you already.
We Want to Hear From You: We’re committed to getting more of your input and your ideas. We plan to do this through another more focused survey, and will probably also hold additional listening sessions this summer. The goal is to get feedback on the targeted areas we’re looking at in our planning, things like: pool and pool deck, fitness classroom and weight room, mail room, and locker rooms.
You should receive the survey later this month. Please be on the lookout for it, as it’s important we hear your voice.
Deep engagement with homeowners is a key part of the time-tested method used by McMahon to develop plans for communities like ours. The Board strongly believes that whatever is eventually proposed and implemented must have strong community support. Any proposed improvements will be tied to enhancing the value of your RVR membership, and the value of your home.
Finally, this planning effort will be the key topic of our communications with you over the next year, as planning is priority one for the Board. We look forward to engaging with you, and making sure you call RVR “A place you love to live.”
