FOCUS: Leviathan Forum
on Libraries and Government Data

The immense oceans of information that government agencies produce and collect today, and the inherent fluidity and impermanence of digital media, require a fundamental rethinking of longstanding preservation practices. The 2014 Global Resources Forum Leviathan: Libraries and Government in the Age of Big Data, convened by CRL on April 24–25, explored these new realities and examined the complexities and opportunities they present. This issue of FOCUS reports on the forum, and offers a synopsis of the challenges and strategies identified.
Project Ceres Funds Nine New Projects
Project Ceres—a collaboration between the United States Agricultural Information Network (USAIN), the Agriculture Network Information Center (AgNIC), and CRL—funds small projects that preserve print materials essential to the study of the history and economics of agriculture. Nine institutions will receive funds to digitize and preserve important resources.
CRL Welcomes Seven New Members
As of the new fiscal year that began on July 1, CRL has welcomed a variety of  institutions as members of the world’s largest and most enduring cooperative collection development community. The recent growth of CRL membership affirms the importance of primary source materials at academic institutions where expectations for faculty and honors-level student research are high.
Linda Hall Usage Expands 22%
CRL’s partnership with the Linda Hall Library of Science, Engineering, and Technology continues to increase member libraries’ access to STE material. Use of materials from Linda Hall by CRL members has increased 22% over last year. This year the highest users of the service have been North Carolina State University, the University of Minnesota, and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

This webinar, free for CRL members, will describe CRL’s current licensing priorities and strategies for supporting access to research collections in electronic formats. Attendees will also learn how the eDesiderata platform can support informed local investment decisions.

After last year’s Global Resources Roundtable “Beyond the Fold: Access to News in the Digital Era,” CRL suggested ways research libraries might better ensure that the journalistic record will continue to be available and usable in the future. This members-only webinar will describe CRL’s progress on strategies to address major challenges in the news arena.
