In This Issue: Working With Directories
Welcome to the Dornsife Download. In this newsletter we'll cover:
  • How to maintain your site's directories
  • Managing who has access to your site
  • Creating user-friendly, accessible links
  • Plus tips and tools for managing your site
Also, you'll notice dornsife.usc.edu now reflects the update to four divisions within the college: Humanities, Life Sciences, Math and Physical Sciences, and Social Sciences. Changes include how academic departments, majors and minors are categorized on the site in lists and on the main menu. New landing pages for each of the divisions will be added in the coming weeks.
As always, if you need assistance with your site, you can visit our website support hub or you can reach out to the web support team directly at webproject@dornsife.usc.edu or via our Slack channel. We're here to help!
Now, here's the download.

Recommended Review: Site Directories

We suggest periodically looking at all of the pages on your website to ensure they're up to date, but here's a reminder to review the directory pages on your website to make sure you’re presenting the most current information about the faculty and staff in your unit.
There are three different types of directory pages. One template pulls information directly from personnel databases so it is updated automatically, and the other two must be manually updated with changes.

The Three Types of Directory Pages:
1. Auto-Populated Person Template Pages
Person template pages are populated by information in Workday and MyDornsife, and are automatically revised as the information in those databases is updated.
  • The Dornsife web team sets up these database-driven directories on your website
  • We recommend that you periodically review them as some issues can arise, for instance, if a person has a primary appointment in another Dornsife department or in another USC college or unit
2. Manual Person Listing Page
Manually built Person pages look the same as the auto-populated Person template pages, but must be created and updated by hand. These are often used when a unit would like to display a person listing collection that cannot be pulled from a database, such as center/institute faculty, alumni, etc. The listing page can link to manually created profiles or to faculty or staff members' database-populated directory pages.
3. Manual Directories Built with Design Components
Some sites have directories built using the design components in our component library such as Editorial Cards, Stacking Cards or other options. They must be updated manually.

If you are unsure what type of directory your site has, please email webproject@dornsife.usc.edu and we can assist you.
Also, if you would like to switch your directory page to a database-driven page that automatically updates based on faculty and staff personnel information, please email webproject@dornsife.usc.edu.

Who Has Access to Edit Your Site?

Site admins, this is your reminder to review who has access to edit your site! It's a quick process.
If you are an administrator for a Dornsife website, you can manage your website users, including changing their roles or removing their access in WordPress.

Creating User-Friendly & Accessible Links

Use these best practices to ensure your links are optimized for web visitors and accessible to people using assistive technologies such as screen readers or keyboard-only navigation.

When inserting links in your content, make sure that the link text describes the destination clearly and concisely.

✅ Correct: "For more information about accessibility, visit the Web Accessibility Initiative website."

❌ Incorrect: "For more information about accessibility, click here."
Why is this less accessible? People using a keyboard to navigate your page will skip the contextual information outside the link, and will not know what "click here" is referring to.

❌ Incorrect: "For more information about accessibility, visit https://www.w3.org/WAI/fundamentals/accessibility-intro/."
Why is this less accessible? People using screen readers will hear the entire URL being read to them, one letter at a time. Additionally, URLs are often harder to understand than a simple description of what can be found at the URL.
