| Announcements Cognitive Interviewing for Testing Survey Questions
A short Skype course with Pamela Campanelli, PhD

This course is designed to familiarize researchers with the powerful and efficient method of piloting survey questions called cognitive interviewing. Cognitiveinterviewing is a type of in-depth interviewing that focuses on respondents’ thought processes in answering survey questions and uses specialized techniques such as thinking aloud, probing, observation and paraphrasing. The course addresses what cognitive interviewing is and how to do it. Some prior experience working with questionnaire items will help participants get the most out of this course. The course will take place using Skype. We aim for 4-5 Portland participants to share one Portland call-in site, currently expected on the Portland State University campus. We'll meet from approx. 9:30am - 2:00pm each day. Pamela Campanelli is a survey methods consultant and U.K. chartered statistician and chartered scientist. She works from England. She holds a PhD in statistics from the London School of Economics, and an MA in survey research methods and BA in psychology from The University of Michigan. Prior to becoming an independent consultant, she was a Research Associate at The University of Michigan, a Survey Statistician at the U.S. Bureau of the Census, and Chief Research Officer at the UK Institute for Social and Economic Research at the University of Essex. This Skype course came about because three social scientists took Dr. Campanelli’s Survey Research Center course at Michigan in June, 2018, were impressed, and asked for a training that focuses on cognitive interviewing. Cost for participation will depend on the number of participants. Plan on $400 per person. If more participants commit solidly to join us, the cost could go down but plan on $400.
