Volunteer

Volunteers play a vital role in our mission by bringing the collection to life through engaging educational interactions with garden visitors.

Do you like plants and people? Come to a volunteer orientation and learn how you can get involved in the Garden.  We provide training, resources, and monthly educational tours for people interested in learning more about our collection of plants.  There are easy ways to help the Garden at events, festivals, and with daily activities interacting with visitors from around the world.  Find out more by coming to an upcoming Volunteer Orientation.

About the Garden

Established in 1916, UBC Botanical Garden curates a collection of ca. 12,000 plants, representing approximately 8,000 taxa from temperate regions around the world.

June in the Garden
Following on from the "everything is flowering a month ahead of schedule" pattern of the past few months, June 2015 looks to be lock-step, so the discussion here will be of summer flowers. Given the heat and lack of rain our summers bring, there is increasing interest in plants that tolerate these conditions, and a tour around the E.H. Lohbrunner Alpine Garden is an excellent place to see plants that fit these criteria.

Shop in the Garden & Garden Centre
Master Gardeners are in the Garden Centre every Saturday and Sunday from 12 noon to 4 pm to answer gardening questions.
The Garden Centre is bursting with green; seasonal ready-to-bloom plants arrive weekly from our commercial suppliers. Our own volunteer propagation groups continue to supply many plants not commercially available including some from Botanical Garden.
Some of our favourite products are:
  • Seeds: West Coast Seeds, UBC Farm Seeds, and seeds of popular ornamental plants collected in the UBC Botanical Garden by our volunteer Friends of the Garden.
  • Books: Nancy Turner's monumental two-volume work, Ancient Pathways, Ancestral Knowledge. The culmination of more than 5 decades of research and insight, this authoritative reference work is of immense importance not only to a wide variety of scholars, but also to the general reader interested in the ways in which indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest have used and interacted with plants, how goods and ideas have been shared between peoples, and how this  is expressed through stories and narratives.
  • Bugs: Insect Hotels for summer bees and other insects, a Starter Cottage with 20 Exy-harvest tubes, a hatching and storage shelter for cocoons, tools for cocoons, a poster of the lifecycle of bees, books, and a DVD “All about Mason bees”
  • Stationery: a lovely series of greeting cards featuring monochrome prints of vegetables with coloured envelopes from “petits mots” of Quebec.
  • Tableware: a fun collection of bistro serving plates and condiment dishes featuring French food graphics.
  • Living decorations: Our Workshop volunteers have potted up sedums, sedum wreaths and container of herbs for your summer table, patio or window sill.
  • There is a selection of statuary, bird-baths and terracotta pots to compliment your plantings and Seasoil to replenish your pots and beds.
