Nearly 1,700 Volunteers Unite for 27th Annual Day of Caring
On Friday, September 6, nearly 1,700 volunteers helped kick off United Way of the Capital Region’s 2019 campaign by participating in the 27th annual Day of Caring, which is the largest one-day mobilization of volunteers in Cumberland, Dauphin and Perry counties.
Dressed in “LIVE UNITED” T-shirts, volunteers from 81 companies worked on 125 projects including painting, landscaping, the installation of smoke alarms in Harrisburg, and a major outdoor cleanup project in Allison Hill.
PNC Bank once again served as the lead sponsor for Day of Caring, extending its more than two decades of support of this event.
“The United Way and its partner organizations are making a positive and measurable impact on the lives of Capital Region residents,” said Jim Hoehn, PNC regional president in Central Pennsylvania. “PNC is committed to helping improve the health, vitality and economic stability of the communities we serve. In addition to our longstanding sponsorship of Day of Caring activities, we have a strong presence at the day's events which reflects our employees’ personal investment in strengthening our local communities.”
Volunteers also enjoyed a fantastic kickoff breakfast at the Scottish Rite Cathedral in Harrisburg that was sponsored by Wegmans and Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.

Volunteers Needed to Help Working Families with Tax Preparation
Volunteers are needed to offer free tax preparation to help working families receive the federal and state tax credits they are eligible for.
The service is offered through the Money in Your Pocket (MIYP) program, a community partnership led by United Way of the Capital Region that is committed to the economic stability of local families. In tax year 2018, 272 volunteers filed 4,691 tax returns, resulting in more than $4.6 million returned to local families. The average annual income for clients receiving tax preparation services was $21,100, which helped increase their household income by an average of 6 percent.
No previous experience is required and training is provided. Volunteers are also needed to serve as greeters (no tax preparing required for this position). Scheduling is flexible with daytime, evening and Saturday opportunities available from January through April 2020.
The Money in Your Pocket campaign is supported by the PNC Foundation and the U.S. Department of Treasury, Internal Revenue Service.
