This week, we're talking about your environmental wellbeing, specifically about physical safety. It is well-known that students learn more and perform better in school when they feel safe.
The JED Foundation is a non-profit that aims to promote the emotional wellbeing of young adults. According to the JED Foundation, there are some tips that college students can use to stay safe on campus. They include:
- Familiarize yourself with campus. Knowing where you are going and identifying accessible and more well-travelled paths will help you feel safer on campus. Check out the UChicago interactive campus map here.
- Include the campus security/emergency number in your phone speed dial. This can be handy in case of an accident, injury or crime. Save the UChicago Police Department phone number (773.702-8181 or 123 from a campus phone) or download the UChicago SAFE App to have these resources easily accessible.
- Request a safety escort if you are walking during a time/in a location in which you are uncomfortable. Activate the Friend Walk function on the UChicago Safe App so that they can track your location until you arrive safely to your destination.
For an overview of safety and security resources at UChicago, check out this video. In addition to these resources, it's important to keep these three things in mind:
1. Be alert. Minimize distractions and remove headphones.
2. Plan ahead. Plan your route in advance and notify a friend of your plan.
3. Trust your instincts. Be alert to your surroundings. If you feel uncomfortable, leave or seek help.
