On December 1st, The Savoie College of Engineering held our traditional Engineering Cap Day. Our Fall 2022 senior graduating cohort enjoyed grilled hot dogs while picking up their engineering caps to wear at commencement.

The Order of Engineer is a ceremony held in the United States to foster a sense of pride and responsibility in the engineering profession. This ceremony is meant to bridge the gap between training and experience.
|
| |
| After engineers take their oath of responsibility, a ring is placed on the pinky finger of an engineer's dominant hand as a symbol to identify as an engineer and to remind them of their commitment.
On December 9th, before commencement, the Savoie College of Engineering held the Order of Engineer ceremony, celebrating our seniors on the beginning of their careers as engineers. We were also pleased to ring our own Dr. Robert A. Savoie, Dr. Paul Schilling, Dr. Ebrahim Amiri, and Taylor Weidman.

Get to Know the Center for Equity and Diversity in Engineering
|
|
|
The Center for Equity and Diversity in Engineering (CEDE) serves all students and faculty in the Savoie College of Engineering, with special focus on supporting the recruitment, retention and degree completion of underrepresented minority and female engineer students. CEDE aims to support the growth, learning, and development of engineering students by helping to remove barriers and providing tools of engagement and resources for success.
LeAsha J. Moore (left) serves as the Director for CEDE and will be leading academic and programmatic initiatives within. LeAsha is originally from Cincinnati, OH and brings extensive experience in Diversity, Equity, and inclusion within Higher Education and in K-12 environments. She is excited to support students by creating an environment of support where students can receive tangible resources on their path of becoming engineers.
Additionally, CEDE will be supported by our graduate assistant Toni Trail (right). Toni was born and raised in Tomball, Texas. She moved to New Orleans in 2017 to attend Xavier University of Louisiana, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Physics with a minor in Mathematics and Biology. She enjoys spending time with her NOLA Church family, visiting the parks, and exploring the culture of the city. Toni is enrolled in our Engineering Management program.
The Center for Equity and Diversity in Engineering is excited to support students as they embark on their engineering journeys. We encourage students to visit us and make connections.

The Savoie College of Engineering has invested in a popcorn machine for our students. Somehow, with the enticing aroma and savory snack, navigating differential equations doesn't seem so horrific.

Student Receives Scholarship at Coastal Conference
|
Restore America’s Estuaries held their Coastal & Estuarine Summit in New Orleans in early December. Congratulations to our very own Civil and Environmental Engineering graduate student Kayla Ellzey on receiving a scholarship from the organization.
Kayla was "thrilled to be a scholar recipient for #RestoreAmericasEstuariesSummit2022." She continued, "The theme of this year’s Summit is Resilient Coasts. Resilient Communities. This theme reflects the vital role, now more than ever, that our coasts play in protecting and providing for coastal residents, the economy, and natural ecosystems. The Louisiana Gulf is on the front line of coastal restoration and climate change. Seas are rising and storms are becoming more severe and more regular, resulting in erosion, land loss, and economic hardships. Additionally, it is oftentimes the most vulnerable among us that stand to lose the most in the face of these challenges.”
