Quarterly Gathering on January 20th:
                                                                                                           January 10, 2018
The Gospel of Mark opens with these words, “The beginning
of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.”

From there we move straight into the baptism of Jesus; no manger, no angels, no shepherds, no wise men. Mark was the first Gospel to be composed, and the author’s desire was to share what is laid out in that first verse, the good news!  Mark had an announcement to make and with the opening words called everyone to listen. The good news was/is Jesus, and Jesus meant God’s Kingdom had begun in and through Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection. So, "listen up", Mark says: this story moves fast, this story will challenge you, this story invites you to join in this good news!
Over the next 5 weeks, as we reflect on "Hope is Born!  Now What?", we will look at the first chapter of Mark and listen for how the early disciples learned alongside Jesus how to be a part of God’s work in the world as disciples of Jesus Christ. As we read and listen, sing and pray, we will question, “What do these stories tell us about who and how we are to be as disciples?" I invite you to join us at Parkway Hills this next 5 weeks as we all seek to live into our call as disciples of Jesus Christ (below is an outline of the series). I also invite you to join me in reading through the first chapter of Mark each week.  Read it slowly, read it prayerfully. Pay attention to words, images, phrases, or questions that speak to you and sit with those. Invite the Holy Spirit to be a presence as you read. I look forward to this time in worship and reflection with all of you in the coming weeks and I pray that we will all be empowered and encouraged by the stories of these early followers of Jesus!
Peace in Christ,
Dawn

Saturday,
January 20th,

is the second of four Quarterly Gatherings designed to help Dawn and Shawn Flowers get to know their new church family better. If you joined PHUMC in the last 6 to 10 years, you'll receive a postcard invitation to this second dinner. Dawn will have a taco bar set up in their home; you bring a side, dessert, or drinks to share. (If you are a visitor, please feel free to attend whichever gathering is most convenient for you.) Enjoy fellowship with your pastor and get to know your fellow members better during this casual "come and go" gathering between 6:00 and 10:00 pm on Saturday, January 20th.

Join the Fray!

Everyone should learn a new skill in the new year; a great one is working with yarn! If you're interested in learning how to knit or crochet, join the Yarn Ministry this Saturday, January 13th, from 9:00 am until noon at the Weissenborn home. There will be coffee, bagels and cream cheese, and plenty of smiling faces eager to teach you. This year, we've set a goal of making 150 hats for the PHUMC Homeless Ministry; we are recruiting all willing hands (young, old, male, female) to grab some yarn and join the "fray"! Contact Shelley Powers for more information.
We are preparing for an all new, 10-week session of WEDNESDAY re:treat NIGHTS, beginning January 31st!  Watch for more information.
Welcome our Newest Member!  Sweet little Lucy Mills Aikens was born on Monday the 8th; she and her parents are already home and doing great!  Please send a note of congratulations or an offer of help to Hunter and Adrienne as they adjust to life as a family of 3!
