Makenna Dawson, a master’s in architecture student from Blue Springs, Mo., worked with KU Libraries to create a 3D modeling project, showing the 100-year evolution of Watson Library.

Architecture students introduce new pavilion at Prairie Park Nature Center |
|
|
|
Students in Keith Van de Riet’s third-year studio celebrated the pavilion they designed and built over the course of two semesters at Prairie Park Nature Center in Lawrence. Built almost entirely of repurposed materials, the sculptural structure will serve as an outdoor classroom, shelter, and community space for visitors to the park and educational center.

Remembering Professor David Griffin |
Professor Emeritus of Architecture David Griffin passed away peacefully at his home at the age of 90 on August 13th. Hired in 1969, he taught in the KU Department of Architecture for 36 years. An educator and practicing architect, Professor Griffin consulted at firms throughout the state and Kansas City area during his time at KU. But his passion was teaching, a fact that was clear to his students, colleagues, and all who knew him.

Architecture professor’s study links operating room design to shorter surgery time |
A study by architecture professor Xiaobo Quan published in HERD: Health Environments Research & Design Journal is believed to be the first of its kind to link operating room design to the length of knee- and hip-replacement surgeries.
Dr. Quan believes his findings can be used to optimize spaces that will both produce better outcomes, via shorter surgeries, for patients and boost the hospital's bottom line.
"Previous studies looked at the impact of space design on the frequency of disruptions encountered, but they didn't control for the huge influence of the surgery type and the speed of the individual surgeon.”

Design students explore printmaking and civic advocacy |
This summer, Sam Yates Meier’s junior visual communication design students stepped away from their computers to examine type design through letterpress printing. At the Hamilton Wood Type Museum in Two Rivers, Wisconsin, students spent a week hand-setting type and inking letterforms to create original printed works.
