SENIOR AND SOPHOMORE EXHIBITION

This week the seniors presented eloquently to the community about their year-long independent projects and the sophomores opened our eyes to the sometimes hidden costs and impacts of the daily items we purchase and consume, from salt and sugar to technology and sneakers.
Seniors will present their projects to their triads in the coming weeks, a type of "defense" of their research, findings, and final product. Triads bring community expertise into the process and provide an opportunity for students to discuss their work with a new audience.

ERDING-CHARLEMONT EXCHANGE 2018: A Great Opportunity!

We are looking for two Academy students and families interested in hosting two 10th graders from Erding, Germany, during the fall of 2018. Erding students visit us every year as part of the longstanding Erding-Charlemont Exchange. The American host students then have a chance – if interested – to go to Germany the following summer. The host families on both sides of the Atlantic are expected to provide room and board and are expected to show the student around the region. There is a $500 family stipend available to help defray related expenses. The Erding students will be here next fall from approximately October 22 to December 22.

Please take a look at the two brief bios of Charlotte and Marius and discuss this wonderful opportunity with your family. FYI: While preference is given to rising 10th graders, Academy hosts do not have to be in 10th grade.

NEWS FROM THE ACADEMY'S GSA (Gender and Sexuality Alliance)

Today was the national Day of Silence, an annual event organized by GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network), starting in 1996. The day-long vow of silence represents the silencing of LGBTQ youth, and is meant to bring attention to anti-LGBT name-calling, bullying and harassment in schools. The Day of Silence provides participants with a better understanding of the experiences of those who are targeted by such treatment. Twenty-three Academy students participated today, joining thousands nationwide.

Next Saturday (May 5), our GSA will be participating in Northampton Pride! Pride is an annual, joyful celebration with a parade starting at 11:00 AM at Old South Street, and ending at the Three County Fairgrounds, where there will be a plethora of information, and activities. Northampton's Main Street is filled with marchers and floats, and is covered in candy and rainbow flags every year. The GSA will be making signs next week. Contact Sophia C or Sam F if you’d like to march with the Academy’s GSA!

The Academy is a proud sponsor of Northampton Pride, and will have an information table under the tent at the Fairgrounds.

SPORT RECAP, Week of April 23

The JV Ultimate team had their first win on Tuesday against PVCICS. The final score was 5-4. Raymond M had 3 assists and one goal, Lila G, Kayla H, and Nacho d. also contributed to the scoring. The team had a very well fought game against Buxton on Thursday, losing 11-8. Sylvie M, Elaina G-B, Alec D, and Avery M all scored while Alec D and Lila G recorded several assists.

The girls lacrosse team defeated Pinecobble 21-9 on Wednesday with goals from Academy students Ruby R and Ella D and strong defense and an assist from Celeste D. The teams also played a scrimmage with some of Pinecobble's younger players, and Celeste D, Haven VW, Ruby R, and Ella D also contributed to the scoring in that game.

On Tuesday, the Academy's middle school Ultimate team lost to a formidable PVCICS squad by of score of 11-1.  Nick F scored the only Aardvark goal, late in the game, on an assist from Anna P-C. Ella R and Anna P-C played well in the challenging windy conditions. Employing the new team mantra, "All In," the team defeated the Four Rivers middle school girls squad 15-2 at Greenfield Community College on Thursday afternoon. Ruby C had two goals and a remarkable six assists in the win. Atticus R had two goals and four assists. Other players with goals and/or assists were Juliet C, Nick F, Tess M-R, Greta M, Anna P-C, Chanina K, Jorja M, and Charlie P. It was the improving team's first win of the season!

The Aardvarks' zone and quick transition offense proved too much for Hartsbrook's spirited coed team on Tuesday.  Eliza, Hendrick, and Sam were consistent endzone threats, While Will and Nat both put up several assists. Strong defensive plays by Linnea, Tucker, and Grayson were crucial in pulling off the victory. The Aardvarks won 10 -7.

In a rainy match against Four Rivers’ Girls' Varsity Ultimate team on Wednesday, our Varsity squad came up short of a victory, losing 9-15 to the talented team from the East. Despite a last-minute run of 5 straight points, including 4 from Nat, our Varsity squad couldn't make up the difference in the face of Four Rivers’ highly technical offense. Tucker had a strong game, racking up six assists and five defensive blocks. Linnea, Izzy B, Liam N, and Nat played phenomenal defense as well. The teams came together after the game to share feedback and praise in a show of good spirit.

A fast-paced and exciting game ended in victory for our Varsity squad on Thursday, against the Four Rivers Boys' JV team. Our dynamic zone defense stymied the visiting team's handling, and our well-rounded offense took the game 11-8. In all, nine of our players scored at least one goal. Grayson and Liam F's excellent defense were crucial in holding the opponent scoreless in the second half of the game.

Families please help your student(s) to gather what's needed and be sure to label any garden or other tools that need to make their way home again!
