Welcome our New VegKins Volunteer Coordinator
ARC is excited to welcome Ashley Leisner as the new volunteer coordinator for the VegKins family group for vegan children and their parents. Ashley is relatively new to ARC, but has jumped in with both feet and already proven invaluable. She and her husband just had their first child and are looking forward to raising her in a supportive vegan community.
We also want to give a huge thank you to Shelly Bell for leading VegKins so capably and smoothly for the last several years. We would love to find a co-coordinator to share VegKins event planning with Ashley. If you're interested, email Chelsea at chelsea@animalrightscoalition.comThe next VegKins event will be a get together and dinner/snack for families at Maple Maze in Maple Grove on Saturday, March 19. Rabbits are not toys
Rabbits are not Toys
She doesn't need daily attention and exercise, doesn't need to be spayed or neutered, doesn't need hay or fresh greens. Best of all, a TOY rabbit won't depend on you for the next 10 years.
We're not discouraging responsible adoptions of homeless companion rabbits, but it's that time of year when many rabbits are purchased as Easter gifts for children, only to end up unwanted and discarded at shelters where they will likely be euthanized due to lack of space. Some people simply abandon bunnies to live outdoors, under the mistaken impression that domesticated rabbits can fend for themselves.
The Minnesota Companion Rabbit Society points out that children and rabbits aren't usually a good match. While children naturally want to hold a bunny, they won't understand why the rabbit may struggle, bite, or kick as they would instinctively as if seized by a predator. The rabbits sold in pet stores are typically from large pet mill breeders, are usually very young, and need to be handled with care as they can be easily injured.
If you or someone you know is thinking about purchasing a rabbit for a child, please buy a stuffed toy instead. Most pet shops will not accept returns of animals once it becomes clear that a purchase wasn't such a good idea.
