GRANDPARENTS AND FRIENDS DAY
RECAP AND THANKS
Grandparents and Friends Day
Thanks to the combined efforts of students, faculty members, and parents, last Friday's Grandparents and Friends Day was a well-received and unqualified success.  Singers and seniors entertained and enlightened all of us at the beginning of the day, our visitors loved attending classes with their hosts, the whole community enjoyed a delicious lunch together, and our guests engaged in a lively conversation with Dr. Bloomfield during the APC-sponsored tea.
Special thanks to the Academy Parents Council for the delicacies provided for the tea, and to Rebekah Boyd for coordinating a beautiful event.  Joining Rebekah and pitching in all day were Regan Hall and Lida Forbes.  We're grateful for their efforts, and for the help of so many students and teachers to transform the Sumner Recital Hall several times during the course of the program.
Grandparents and Friends Day
COMMUNITY SERVICE DAY
MAY 3
On May 3, students and faculty members will go out into our community in teams to lend a hand to various local organizations. This longstanding Academy tradition honors  founding headmaster Eric Grinnell and his five founding colleagues. Participation is required and every effort will be made to allow everyone to do so at a site that is comfortable for their needs. Those to whom we are able to offer our help are very grateful for the impact our efforts will have upon their work.
Many teams will be helping with outside chores such as yard work for seniors through the Shelburne Falls Senior Center, cleaning along the Chickley River in areas designated by the Connecticut River Watershed Association, sprucing up the Buckland Recreation Area, and helping to clear Charlemont Trails under the direction of those who have created these recreation sites. Others will be working in the Charlemont and Shelburne Falls libraries, and one group will travel a little further afield to do some outdoor work at INSPIRE in Brattleboro, a school founded by one of our families.
Students will receive several  reminders closer to the date about site-specific clothing and footwear appropriate for their jobs, garden or cleaning gloves, and any special tools required. EVERYONE should pack a lunch, snacks, sun block, bug repellent, and a water bottle.
We will be leaving school immediately after Morning Meeting and returning in time for sports. In some cases, groups may return early and if so should be prepared to help Mr. White with any tasks he might assign at that time. Afternoon buses will run on the regular schedule.
More information will follow, but please contact Martha Tirk with any questions.
Blood Drive - April 26 Seeking Donations of Blood and Baked Goods!
The Red Cross returns to campus for its twice yearly Blood Drive at The Academy!
The Blood Drive will be held on Tuesday, April 26, from 1:00 to 6:00 PM. Our community's goal is for every student to find at least one person to donate blood. Not only does the drive help save lives, it also has the potential to garner college scholarships for our seniors.
Appointments can be made by filling out the donor form or by calling the Main Office during regular business hours or by visiting the Red Cross Blood Drive appointment page and entering our zip code.
Baked goods for donors are also a high priority, so there are ways for everyone to lend a hand. We appreciate in advance your support of this important service event!  Please contact Nora Bates Zale if you can donate baked goods, or if you have any questions or concerns about the event. Thanks in advance for your support!
Wednesday E Block
April 27, 1:15 - 2:10 PM

Seniors Leah Finn-Erb and Indra Rapinchuk Souccar will both be presenting to the community as part of the culmination of their senior projects. Leah has been studying the environmental impact of ocean pollution, and Indra has been exploring safety in equestrian eventing. We welcome the extended community to attend this event.
Kickstarter for Celtic Realm
Help Bring Back Celtic Realm
Mr. Miller has been interested in game design for years, and has applied this extracurricular focus in his Biology and Statistics classes at The Academy over the course of the year. Recently, 9th grade Biology played a simulation game involving a reenactment of adaptive radiation among the finches of the Galapagos Islands, and Statistics students designed their own board games with a random component as they studied probability.
In his spare time, Mr. Miller has been running a Kickstarter campaign to fund the resurrection of an heirloom strategy game. The game, Celtic Realm, was designed in 1979 by his father, Randy Miller. Will is working on a new edition with revised rules and new components. With just 48 hours to go, the funding goal has nearly been reached. To learn more about Celtic Realm, please follow this link to the campaign on Kickstarter. Contribute and/or share the story if you can, and help support this teacher's passion for games.
