Have Vital Conversations It’s fall, a chill is in the air, and the building is bustling with activity, including in-house and virtual events that bring the St. John’s Law community together for vital conversations:
On 9/22, we launched the Center for Race and Law with a screening of the feature-length documentary film, Who We Are: A Chronicle of Racism in America. The launch celebration continues tonight, Thursday, 10/6, as the Center’s director, Professor Renee Nicole Allen, hosts a virtual conversation with criminal defense/civil rights lawyer Jeffrey Robinson about the film and his work. There’s still time to register for tonight’s virtual event.
It's the season for curling up in your cozy spot with a good book, and the Black Authors Book Club has the perfect selection for you this month: Fight the Power: Law and Policy Through Hip Hop Songs by Gregory Parks and Frank Cooper. When you’re finished (or even if you’re not) join Professors Sheldon Evans and Cheryl Wade as they lead a lively Book Club meeting on 10/13 about the reading. Register to join the conversation.
On 10/17 our student-run Journal of Civil Rights and Economic Development will present a virtual symposium on Closing the Justice Gap: A Civil Right to Counsel. This event—and the Journal’s related symposium issue—will bring together a panel of leading scholars and practitioners to examine issues surrounding the lack of a civil right to counsel in the Unites States and how to remedy them. Register to attend.
Another vital conversation is on tap for 11/4 as the St. John’s Law Review presents its virtual symposium marking the 40th Anniversary of the Plyler v. Doe and Immigration Law in the United States. Legal scholars and practitioners will discuss the history of Plyler, the rights of undocumented children seeking entry into the United States, ongoing challenges plaguing the U.S. immigration system, and possible solutions to those problems. The symposium proceedings are dedicated to the late Professor Michael A. Olivas, whose immigration law scholarship and contributions as a change agent in the field endure for the benefit of us all. To attend the symposium, register today.
Welcome ITALSA! We're pleased to announce the launch of the Italian American Law Students Association (ITALSA). One of our newest student affinity groups, with roots in the Law School's former Justinian Lawyers Society, ITALSA is open to all and celebrates Italian Americans' rich history at, and enduring connection to, St. John's Law. The group held its inaugural event on 9/27, welcoming alumni and other members of the Columbian Lawyers Association for an evening of conversation and networking. For its next event on 10/19, ITALSA and the Catholic Law Students Association will co-host Hon. Joseph F. Bianco, who presides on the Second Circuit Court of Appeals and teaches as an adjunct professor at St. John's Law. He'll share his perspective on working in service to the law as a Catholic and an Italian American. Then, on 10/25 ITALSA is hosting a Tuesday "Sunday dinner" to nourish and delight the Law School's students and faculty. Everyone is welcome at ITALSA's Sunday dinner table! To learn more about ITALSA and its upcoming events, email marco.mongelli21@my.stjohns.edu. And complete and submit this online form to join ITALSA's mailing list.

In the Field The FDR Library was the backdrop for Professor John Q. Barrett’s Constitution Day conversation with Kermit Roosevelt III. They discussed how the “standard story” of the origin and development of American values has helped—or hindered—the Nation’s journey towards a more universal equality for all Americans. You can view their conversation online.
Opinions Over at Compact magazine, Professor Mark Movsesian writes about Azerbaijan's invasion of Armenia. The discussion continues for the magazine’s podcast series, where Professor Movsesian shares how the West’s indifference to the invasion of this aspiring democracy by a dictatorship reflects a combination of hypocrisy, cynicism, and shortsightedness.
In the News “Is it unusual? Sure. Is it impermissible under the statute? Absolutely not,” says Professor Michael Perino in this Bloomberg story on a federal magistrate judge’s ruling that a Credit Suisse investor wouldn’t adequately represent a proposed class alleging the bank made false and misleading statements about its practice of lending money to Russian oligarchs.
