ICYMI: Faculty Development on Inclusive Learning

Last fall as part of the SMHS Anti-Racism Coalition (ARC) Educational Series, our own Howard Straker and Susan LeLacheur discussed how to create a safe and inclusive learning environment for vulnerable conversations while sharing strategies and tools for facilitating discussions about bias, including race/class/sexuality in case studies, and teaching beyond the “hidden” curriculum. Watch “How to Talk About Race, Power, and Privilege in Classroom and Clinical Settings”.

Improving Breakout Room Discussions in Online Teaching by Using Collaborative Documents

This article from Dennis Lowe, Ph.D. at Faculty Focus offers suggestions for using collaborative documents such as Google Docs or Jamboard during breakout sessions in a live online class. If you aren't aware, Jamboard from Google is now included in our GW accounts, and it is a good replacement for in-person activities like those done with stickynotes
Using collaborative documents not only makes the group work more meaningful, but it also helps the instructor quickly gauge each group’s progress and facilitate when needed.

Instructional Core Workshops

The Instructional Core office, a division of Libraries and Academic Innovation, has scheduled a number of workshops to help you start the semester on the right foot. Some topics include: using Zoom in Blackboard, improving course accessibility with Blackboard Ally, and tools for creating online lectures. To see the full list and to register, check out their website. Be mindful that some of the tools covered in these workshops (like Echo360) are not used by SMHS. If you are unsure about a tool's availability, feel free to contact us at hsptech@gwu.edu.
