Truman Scholarship Info Session
Tuesday, Oct. 23 at 3:30 p.m. in VDA 241
The Harry S. Truman Scholarship is a merit-based scholarship for college juniors who plan to pursue careers in government or elsewhere in public service. The Foundation has supported Truman Scholars in many fields of study, including: agriculture, biology, engineering, technology, medicine,  environmental management, economics, education, arts education, government, history, international relations, law, political science, public administration, nonprofit management, public health, and public policy.
Truman Scholars receive up to $30,000 toward a public service-related graduate degree, participate in leadership development activities, and have special opportunities for internships and employment with the federal government.
This info session will familiarize you with the award, application process, and best practices for constructing a competitive application.  Open to U.S. citizens (or a U.S. nationals). Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors are encouraged to attend.

Teaching English Abroad Through Postgrad Fellowships
Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 4:30 p.m. in St. Robert's Hall 235
To celebrate WorldFest 2018, ONIF is presenting an overview of various teaching English abroad fellowships, including application components, benefits, and selection criteria. Depending on the fellowship, students may be placed in elementary schools, secondary schools, or in universities overseas to supplement local English language instruction & to provide a native speaker presence in the classrooms. 
Fellowships covered include: The Fulbright U.S. Student Program, Japanese and Exchange Teaching Program (JET),  Teaching Assistant Program in France (TAPIF), US Teaching Assistantships at Austrian Secondary Schools (USTA), English Opens Doors in Chile, North American Language and Culture Assistants in Spain, and more.
Undergrads, graduate students, and alumni of all majors are encouraged to attend.

All or Multiple Disciplines
The Smithsonian Institution Fellowship Program (SIFP) for Graduate Students- Deadline: November 1. The Smithsonian Institution Fellowship Program offers opportunities for independent research or study related to Smithsonian collections, facilities, and/or research interests of the Institution and its staff. Fellowships are offered to graduate students, predoctoral students, and postdoctoral and senior investigators to conduct independent research and to utilize the resources of the Institution with members of the Smithsonian professional research staff serving as advisors and hosts. The Smithsonian Institution Fellowship Program offers fellowships for research and study in the following fields and encourages applications of an interdisciplinary nature:
  • Animal behavior, ecology, and environmental science, including an emphasis on the tropics
  • Anthropology, including archaeology, cultural anthropology, linguistics, and physical anthropology
  • Astrophysics and astronomy
  • Earth sciences and paleobiology
  • Evolutionary & systematic biology
  • Folklife
  • History of science and technology
  • History of art, especially American, contemporary, African, and Asian art, twentieth-century American crafts, and decorative arts
  • Materials research
  • Molecular biology
  • Social and cultural history of the United States

CEAIE Teach in China- Deadline: November 7. Teach in China is looking for recent graduates with an interest in teaching, education and/or China for 12-month teaching placements in China.  Successful grantees will be placed at a Chinese school, from elementary to the university level, in locations across China.  Benefits for those selected for the program include:
  • Flights: Roundtrip international airfare 
  • Local transportation: Airport pick-up in Beijing; the first train ticket from Beijing to program school
  • Monthly salary: comparable to Chinese teachers’ salaries
  • Visa: work visa, the visa fee incurred overseas will be reimbursed up to 2,000RMB; the visa fees incurred in China will be covered by the program school
  • Insurance: Comprehensive Medical Insurance for Foreigner and Countryman from Hong Kong and Macao no less than 2,000 RMB
  • Housing: Free accommodation, including private bedroom, living room (shared), kitchen (independent or shared; if no kitchen, then access to canteen), furniture, television, water heater, refrigerator, washing machine, air conditioning and internet connection.
  • TESOL Certification:  Those without TEFL/TESOL certification will be required to go through a training leading to being certified TESOL/TEFL instructors.
The program is open to citizens of the US, Canada, the UK, New Zealand and Australia between the ages of 20 and 55. Chinese work permit policy requires that these teachers be native speakers of English. Applicants should have obtained a Bachelor’s degree by the time their program begins; applicants who have TESOL certification or 2 or more years of teaching experience are highly desired.  

The Hillary Rodham Clinton Award for Peace and Reconciliation at Queen's University Belfast- Deadline: January/February. The University will provide a full tuition-fee waiver to an exceptional female student from the USA who wishes to pursue study in a field related to politics, conflict transformation or human rights. The five MA programmes covered by the award will include:
  • LLM Human Rights Law
  • MA Conflict Transformation and Social Justice
  • MA Global Security and Borders
  • MA Politics
  • MA Violence, Terrorism and Security 
Hillary Rodham Clinton made an outstanding contribution to reconciliation throughout the Northern Ireland peace process. She was a strong advocate for the inclusion of women’s voices in the peace talks and became an inspirational role model for many in the Queen’s community.  This award, created in the former Senator’s name, honours her long-standing commitment to peace, stability and education.
