Money in Your Pocket Volunteers Needed

Thousands of families earning less than $55,000 a year are eligible for the federal Earned Income Tax Credit and other federal and state tax credits. Unfortunately, many of these families either don’t know about the credits or they spend hundreds of dollars on tax preparation services.

Volunteers are needed to provide free tax preparation for low- and moderate-income working families in the Capital Region. The service is offered through the Money in Your Pocket (MIYP) program, a community partnership led by United Way of the Capital Region, that is committed to the economic stability of local families. In tax year 2017, 238 volunteers filed 4,725 tax returns, resulting in more than $4.4 million returned to local families.

Anyone can be a tax preparer! No previous experience is required. Training is provided along with on-site support from experienced volunteers. Volunteers are also needed to serve as greeters, which requires just one hour of online training and no tax preparing is required. Scheduling is flexible and there are daytime, evening and Saturday hours available.

For information, visit www.uwcr.org/miyp or contact Heidi Neuhaus at hneuhaus@uwcr.org.
