MR. HOWARD SELECTED AS A BONE MARROW DONOR MATCH

BONE MARROW AND BLOOD DRIVE
FEBRUARY 4, 2017
Many of you may remember the bone marrow drive we hosted in honor of Fr. Michael Christiana, S.J. after he was diagnosed with leukemia and received a life saving bone marrow transplant, thanks to his sister.
Due to the fact that 70% of patients do not have a matching donor in their family, Brebeuf Jesuit is proud to once again partner with Be The Match for a bone marrow registry drive!
During the drive in honor of Fr. Michael, Mr. Todd Howard signed up for the registry and was chosen as a match for a patient in need.  He donated stem cells in early January and saved a life.
We hope that you will be inspired by Mr. Howard and the many others who joined him in signing up for the registry!  It’s easy to do and only takes about 5 minutes.  Just complete a simple form and swab your cheeks.  When you join the Be The Match Registry, you become part of every patient’s search for a donor.
Brebeuf is also taking this opportunity to partner again with the Indiana Blood Center to host a blood drive on February 4!
Bone Marrow and Blood Drive Details:

Br. Guy Consolmagno, S.J.

Join Us for a Presentation from The Pope's Astronomer AND DIRECTOR OF THE VATICAN OBSERVATORY,
Br. Guy Consolmagno, S.J.

Please join Brebeuf Jesuit President, Father Jack Dennis, S.J. for a special presentation titled “The Heavens Proclaim, Astronomy and the Vatican” by Br. Guy Consolmagno, S.J.
Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School
The Efroymson Auditorium
February 7, 2017
7:00 p.m.
A wine & cheese reception will follow the presentation.
Br. Guy’s visit is graciously hosted by Virginia Marten.
Kindly respond to Kim DeWaal at kdewaal@brebeuf.org or 317.524.7128 by February 1, 2017.
Brother Guy Consolmagno, S.J. is the Director of the Vatican Observatory and President of the Vatican Observatory Foundation. The roots of the Vatican Observatory go back to the Gregorian Reform of the Calendar in 1582, and it has been part of an extensive history of Church support for astronomy (Galileo to the contrary!) Its modern mission for the last hundred years is to show there is no inherent conflict between science and religion by simply being people supported by the Church whose sole mission is to "do good science". We'll look into the history of this activity, including a summary of what's being done at the Vatican Observatory today.
Br. Guy, aka “The Pope’s Astronomer”, earned undergraduate and masters' degrees from MIT, and a Ph.D. in Planetary Science from the University of Arizona. He was a postdoctoral research fellow at Harvard and MIT, served in the US Peace Corps (Kenya), and taught university physics at Lafayette College before entering the Jesuits in 1989.

Next week is blues week!

Each year during the Winter Season, Student Council in conjunction with the Brebeuf Mothers Association energizes the student body throughout a week-long event deemed Blues Week!  Each day has a student driven theme and the Mothers Association organizes and gives away small snacks/treats to help beat the Winter Blues. Picture of the Week

Last Friday, our community gathered for another fantastic Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Convocation.
This year's convocation was a collaboration between the Black Student Union and the Diversity Office. The program included a troupe of actors from PinPoints Theatre of Washington, D.C. who presented the much-acclaimed play, "The Meeting." This play is premised upon a fictitious encounter between Dr. King and Malcolm X in a hotel room.
The play asks the audience to consider the question of how the motivations and approaches to social change of Dr. King and Malcolm X compare with one another and how such a conversation might have unfolded.
Special thanks to the Mothers Association Enrichment Committee, the Dads Club, and the Alumni Association for making this possible!

Loves About Brebeuf
I love that Brebeuf offers college counselors who help us with our college applications and the process that goes along with it. I also love that Brebeuf offers class retreats as well as Junior and Senior Kairos so you can really get to know yourself and your peers.
Favorite Class
My favorite class is Honors Anatomy and Physiology with Mrs. McCarter. We are able to complete hands-on labs and activities and afterwards, discuss the topic so it really sinks in.
Future Plans
My future plan is to go to medical school and then serve in the U.S. Navy. Plan B is to become a photographer for National Geographic since I love to travel.
Teams & Co-Curriculars
Bowling Team
Ultimate Frisbee Team
Cross Country Team
Track and Field Team
Black Robe Running Club
Muslim Student Union (Past)
Democratic/Republican Club (Past)
Pre-Med Club
Random Facts
I attended Culver Academies Summer Schools and Camps over the past six summers where I learned how to sail different classifications of inland sailboats (I highly recommend attending). I have also traveled to Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Germany, and Dubai. I was named after the Shannon River in Ireland.
What has been your favorite Brebeuf experience or most memorable moment so far?
My most memorable experience thus far has been Kairos 95. Kairos 95 allowed me to open up to the people in my grade which helped my transition from Virginia Beach. Another memorable Brebeuf experience is getting Tony Dungy's autograph when everybody else was too nervous too.
You have traveled to some fascinating places.  Where are some places that you would like to visit in the future?
In the future, I would like to visit any Norwegian country. I like to visit countries that are rich in history and countries that have not been visited as much. Countries like Sweden, Greenland, Finland, or Denmark. I do not plan on visiting any countries any time soon because it costs a lot of money and I don’t have enough right now. My next visit will most likely be a study abroad program offered by my University.

Snoball Winter Semi-Formal Dance This Saturday

The SnoBall Winter Semi-Formal Dance will take place on Saturday, January 21, 2017, at the Sheraton Indianapolis City Centre in the Meridian Ballroom (lower level ballroom) from 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. with music provided by a DJ. Snacks and water are included with the $15.00 ticket.
Students should dress in semi-formal attire. Students must arrive to the dance before 8:30 p.m. with their Student ID cards. Guest forms for non-Brebeuf students can be picked up in the Dean's Office and submitted when tickets are purchased.
Tickets will be on sale for $15.00 per person, tomorrow in the Main Lobby Desk between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
Note on Parking for Snoball
The Sheraton Indianapolis City Centre Hotel, where Brebeuf Jesuit will be hosting its Snoball dance this weekend, recently contacted us to let us know that there is a very large cheerleading competition going on downtown at the same time, which could limit available spaces in the Sheraton's attached parking garage.
We wanted to make sure to let all families know to ensure they leave themselves enough time to find parking on Saturday, if needed.
If you have any questions, please contact the Dean’s Office.
We are looking forward to seeing everyone this weekend for another fun Snoball Dance!

Virtual Learning Days For Future Weather Closures

The Indiana Department of Education once again approved Brebeuf’s application for their Distance Virtual Learning Program.  The program provides a way for schools meeting the criteria to create a virtual learning environment to replace missed class time, avoiding the necessity for makeup days caused by severe weather cancellations.
During any future weather closures for Brebeuf Jesuit, if a Virtual Learning Day is warranted, families will receive instructions detailing how to access Portals individual class pages regarding the Virtual Learning Program expectations for that class day, as posted by each class instructor.
Virtual Learning Days ensure that when students return to school, the progression of learning has experienced only a minimal disruption.
In the event of a regular class day being cancelled, students will find the following:
  • Assignment posted to Portals on their class page by 8:30 a.m. the day of class cancellation
  • Title of assignment clearly indicating – “Virtual Learning Day Assignment for (date)”
  • A clear deadline for completion, either that day or in the future
If you have any questions concerning Virtual Learning Days, please contact Jen LaMaster, Assistant Principal at jlamaster@brebeuf.org.

Drug and Alcohol Intervention Presentation at Our Lady of Mount Carmel

Our Lady of Mount Carmel will be hosting interventionist Dr. Bruce Perkins for a 45-minute presentation in their parish on January 31, 2017.  Fr. Richard Doerr has graciously invited all Brebeuf Jesuit parents to attend.  The event is free of charge.
Dr. Perkins is a seasoned professional who does drug and alcohol interventions and has worked with school communities for years.  His presentations and interventions have been helpful to spouses, parents, and children or addicts as well as all people concerned about this societal issue or interested in educating themselves.
Dr. Perkins’ presentation will be divided into 4 parts:
  1. Identifying if there is an addiction issue
  2. What are your options
  3. Overcoming the shame
  4. Questions/Answers
Clicking here will provide you with a recent Fr. Richard Doerr pastor column from the OLMC bulletin that discusses this issue more in in depth and provides more details on Dr. Perkins’ visit.

#BrebeufDrives

Thanks again to everyone that made contributions to our last #BrebeufDrives collection right before the break.  It was our most successful Help for the Holidays Drive to date!  Our #BrebeufDrives resumed this week and will conclude on Friday, February 17.  Our collection will benefit the Dayspring Center for Homeless Families. The Dayspring Center indicated several needs that our drive can help fulfill: new twin sheets, twin blankets, pillows, and towels. These much-needed items can be dropped off in the collection boxes located in the Gym Lobby and Front Lobby.  Items may also be left in Nick Klingler's office located next to the chapel.
The Dayspring Center provides, safe shelter, meals, and support services to help the guests staying with them become a healthy, independent family again. These donations truly make a difference!
