Commencement and Ordination this Sunday!
| |
“This has not been a year anyone would have wished for. Nonetheless our students did it with grace and thoughtfulness. I could not be more excited for this group of Jewish leaders who are going off to lead congregations, Hillels, and Jewish institutions. They will make an enormous contribution to the Jewish future.” —Rabbi Dan Judson, Dean of Graduate Leadership Programs
After an unconventional year of study, Hebrew College’s Class of 2021/5781 will graduate on June 6 with Biblical and Talmudic knowledge, as well as a first-hand mastery of resilience, flexibility, and compassion. The graduates, who completed their final year-and-a-half of coursework online, will go on to work in Reform and Conservative synagogues, hillels, and pastoral care settings throughout Greater Boston and across the United States.

At this Sunday’s Commencement and Ordination Ceremonies, Hebrew College will ordain 10 rabbis and three cantors and celebrate more than 30 students receiving their Master of Arts in Jewish Studies; Master of Jewish Education; Master of Jewish Liberal Studies. Commencement will be live-streamed on the Hebrew College YouTube channel at noon on June 6. Ordination ceremonies will be in person, outside, at Hebrew College, and also streamed on the College’s YouTube channel here.

Hebrew College will also bestow honorary degrees on Rabbi Nancy Flam (above), a pioneer in the field of Jewish healing and contemporary spirituality, and Melila Hellner-Eshed (right), a senior research fellow at the Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem, both of whom will offer messages to the graduates at Sunday’s ceremony. (Read more about the them here.)

SUPPORT OUR GRADUATES WITH YOUR GIFT
Graduating ordination students are also giving back to Hebrew College by raising scholarship funds for future students. Please consider a gift in honor of a graduating rabbinical or cantorial student (or their class) to help fund future ordination student scholarships. Help deepen Hebrew College’s mission to educate innovative and compassionate Jewish leaders with a gift of any amount before the close of our fiscal year on June 30, 2021. Thank you!

Hebrew College Teen Leaders Donate $75,000 in Grants
On June 2, 54 teens in the Hebrew College Jewish Teen Foundation of Greater Boston (JTFGB) granted $75,000 in funding to 12 organizations that focus on education inequity, domestic abuse, criminal justice, and pediatric cancer. The JTFGB program teaches local teens from high schools throughout Greater Boston about philanthropy, civic leadership, and grant-making. This year they broke records, raising more than ever before for nonprofits around the world.
“My participation in JTFGB has taught me about philanthropy, how to infuse it into my life on a daily basis, and become a leader in my own community. JTFGB has taught me the importance of making room for philanthropy and furthermore the power of incorporating 'gemilut chasadim,' or acts of loving kindness, in our busy lives.” — Netanya Simon, JTFGB participant (pictured above)
Launched in 2015, JTFGB asks students to choose a philanthropic mission, raise money for that effort, and partner with non-profits—both Jewish and non-Jewish—to make a difference.

Graduates "Master" Their Research
On June 3, students in Hebrew College’s Master of Arts in Jewish Studies, Master of Jewish Education, Master of Jewish Liberal Studies program, and Master of Jewish Education-Pardes Educators program (above) presented their master’s theses during Zoom panel discussions.
Topics ranged from “The Evolution of My Personal Pedagogy in the Shadow of the Coronavirus Pandemic” to “The Evolution of American Reform Sabbath Worship”; from guided meditation to living grief; and from Jewish symbolism to the Christian cross. See all topics and abstracts here.
“Becoming a Jewish educator is the culmination of my passion for Judaism for more than half of my life,” Caleb Adams, a graduate from the Pardes/Hebrew College Educators program, wrote in his thesis abstract. “I came to the Pardes/Hebrew College Educators program with the desire to share my passion for living Jewishly and studying Jewish texts with the next generation.”

Reflecting On Our Journey Parashat Shelach (Numbers 13:1–15:41) By Rabbi Daniel Klein `10, Dean of Students at Hebrew College
The section of the Torah we are in now offers a fairly grim portrayal of the religious journey. It depicts a people incapable of consistently living responsively to the Divine encounter. Again and again, both at the foot of Sinai and as they journey into the wilderness, the People of Israel stray from God and from the path of holiness that they have been invited into. In fact, in this week’s parasha, Shlach, the Israelites who left Egypt are condemned to wander and die in the wilderness because of their faithlessness.
