Holistic Jewish Education: Hebrew College Educates Teachers for this Moment
"Post October 7th, there has been a deep yearning from educators to know more about the nuances and complexity of Israel’s history and current events in Israel (and what’s beneath and beyond the headlines). Then, on top of that important desire, they are eager to learn how they can help their students navigate that information and how they can most effectively respond to their students’ questions. ... Part of what we’re noticing is that this is not only an intellectual conversation. There are a lot of emotions at play. We as educators have had to confront a reality in the United States that hasn’t been felt in some places for many decades." — Dr. Susie Tanchel, Hebrew College Vice President

Hebrew College’s Miller Center Supports Empathy & Dialogue for Campuses and Communities Across the Country
At the start of a new academic year, the Miller Center for Interreligious Learning & Leadership, along with other Hebrew College leaders, have been working with campuses and communities on initiatives aimed at fostering pluralism, building relationships across difference, and preserving dignity in disagreement. They have developed programs with students at George Washington University, Tufts University, Brigham Young University, and the University of Wisconsin as well as with the City of Newton, MA. One of the programs, Empathy Now — a two-part series organized by Miller Center, the Newton Interfaith Clergy Association, and the City of Newton — will hold the second part this Sunday, September 15, to encourage empathy and meaningful dialogue about the topic of Israel and Palestine in our local community.

Sowing with Tears, Reaping with Shouts of Joy
By Rav Rachel Adelman, PhD, Hebrew College Faculty
How do we move beyond lament? In this week’s Haftarah, as in Lamentations and Jeremiah, the prophet addresses the female personification of Jerusalem, though Bat Tzion is not explicitly named. It is one of the “seven (Haftarot) of Comfort [shiva de-nechamta]”, recited in the weeks between Tisha be-’Av and Rosh haShanah. These passages are all taken from Second Isaiah (chapters 40-66), composed during the period known as Shivat Tzion, the Return to Zion, after the Persian Emperor Cyrus, in 539 BCE, decreed that the Jews could return to Judea and rebuild their Temple in Jerusalem.

IN THE NEWS: ART, MUSIC, CREATIVITY
Only 12 days into our academic year, art, music, and culture at Hebrew College are flourishing! Hundreds of community members are gathering at events from Newton, MA to Stowe, VT to share music, literature, art, tefillah (prayer), and torah:
-
Music in Stowe, VT: On Sept. 7, rabbinic alumni musicians Rabbi David Fainsilber`14, Rabbi Micah Shapiro `23, Rabbi Arielle Lekah-Rosenberg `17, and Rabbi Jessica Kate Meyer `14 shared music with a sold-out crowd at Fainsilber's congregation for the Jewish Community of Greater Stowe's 30th anniversary celebration. The event honored former Hebrew College Board Chair Ron Feinstein and included a keynote by Hebrew College President Rabbi Sharon Cohen Anisfeld.
-
Soul Sounds: On Sept. 8, more than 100 people attended our first Soul Sounds concert of the season, "Sounds of Awe: A Concert for Elul with Hazan/Paytan Roni Ish-Ran and Friends." We are grateful to our series sponsors Suzanne Priebatsch, Susan and James Snider, and Diane Troderman, and anonymous, and organizational partners: Base Boston, Jewish Arts Collaborative, Temple Beth Zion, and Temple Reyim. Watch for the full fall concert series lineup coming soon!
- Selichot: Students, faculty and community members gathered for Selichot every morning with master paytan from Jerusalem, Roni Ish-Ran, who also ran two workshops for our community.
-
Campus Partner Book Talk: On Sept. 11, more than 100 people attended a book talk (pictured above) at Hummingbird Books in Newton with President Anisfeld and Rabbi Adina Allen `14 — co-founder of Hebrew College's newest campus partner Jewish Studio Project (JSP). Tonight, guests will gather on campus for a reception for the opening of the JSP-Hebrew College studio on campus.
Campus Partner Event: This Sunday, Hebrew College and campus partner, Jewish Women’s Archive, bring together participants from across our shared campus for a workshop entitled, "A Place at the Table,” inviting us to bring together history, memory, and artmaking in celebration of a woman or nonbinary person who made a mark on our lives.
Art Opening: This Sunday evening, more than 100 people will attend Hebrew College's art exhibit opening, “Silvina Mizrahi: A Sephardic Spirit”. The exhibit, curated by Hebrew College Trustee Deb Feinstein, who spearheads the Hebrew College Arts Initiative, runs September 15-December 20 and showcases Mizrahi's bold, unshakeable joy and Sephardic spirit, building bridges, celebrating life, and echoing her ancestral past.
