How Social Media Affects Mental Health: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly |
Social media has the power to create connections and propel movementsā¦but it can also increase feelings of anxiety and depression. Sometimes even acts as a replacement for in-person social connections. One study found that high usage of social media platforms is linked to increased feelings of loneliness. This is not to say that all social media is bad, but overusing it or placing too much emphasis on self-worth as it relates to social media can lead to a downward spiral. Below are some tips for achieving balance that works for you!
|
- Keep a Social Media Journal
-
Etoulia Salas Burnett, the Executive Director at the Center for Digital Business at Howard, suggests keeping a social media time diary. For one week, log how often you use social media and how you feel after each session. Although our phones can track app usage, they donāt provide insight into how we feel during or after scrolling. This kind of journal can help you better understand your habits and find balance.Ā
- Set a Goal
-
It can be easy to say, āI want to use less social media.ā Iāve personally said this a million times š¤«. It can be even harder to actually stick to that goal. Similar to SMART goals, itās important to create goals that are realistic and attainable. Setting clear limits can help. For example, using Instagram for less than three hours a day or stopping social media use one hour before bed.
- Craft a Go-To List
- Create a list of things you can do instead of reaching for your phone. This could be going for a walk (maybe not this April though, with all of this rain š¢), reading a book, or any activity you enjoy. Having a go-to list of things you love to do instead of being on social media can help you build a healthier balance and make it easier to step away from your screen.
