Congratulations to Rai Pattison, an M.Ed. student in the Special Education – Extensive Support Needs program, who has been named one of Utah’s “Fab 5” 2026 Teachers of the Year, following her recognition as the 2025 Granite School District Teacher of the Year.

| Safia grew up in Santa Cruz, California, later attending college in Boulder, Colorado — the furthest east she had ever lived until joining the University of Utah. She became the College of Education’s Director of Development on October 24, 2019.
Safia has worked across nonprofits, higher education, and the arts. Before coming to the U, she led community employment initiatives at the Columbus Community Center, supporting adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities — a role she calls both her “best” and “hardest” job. She also spent a decade in corporate relations at Westminster College and previously helped bring major Broadway productions like The Phantom of the Opera and Les Misérables to Salt Lake City, introducing innovative student matinees that many teachers say changed their students’ lives.
Safia is the proud mother of MacLane, who has autism. Her lifelong advocacy for him and others fuels her passion for Utah4All and for championing those without a voice. She also has two pet bunnies, Peanut and Kyla, and is a former competitive ski racer who still loves skiing, hiking, and camping.
