From the Administration

VP FOR ACADEMIC LIFE LETTER

Dear Parents, Guardians, Students, and Friends of De La Salle,

On Tuesday December 3, our Academic Affairs Council met to approve the last of the newly proposed curriculum for next year. We meet every other week on late start days, and a different department chair or academic director inaugurates the meeting with prayer. This week, Dr. Elizabeth Berkes offered a compelling meditation on “let us remember,” which the Advent season encourages us all to do. She also shared a mantra that I think I will adopt for Advent: “make room.” As we move through the hustle and bustle of finals, holiday concerts, ornament shopping, new sports seasons, Star Wars watching, and on and on, I am going to ask myself daily to remember and to make room for the Holy in the everyday. ... PRESIDENT'S LETTER

Dear Parents and Guardians,
I believe I saw the first advertisement for Christmas before Halloween – talk about rushing the Seasons!  Christmas is more than shopping and giving gifts to each other. Christmas is centered on the Birth of the Christ Child and the Gift that God has given us.
We are a Lasallian Catholic school and we simply would not exist without this reality. During the Advent Season, we anticipate the gift that God has given us – his only Begotten Son. ... Continue reading

OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE LITURGY

De La Salle Celebrates Our Lady of Gualalupe on December 12

On Thursday, December 12, the De La Salle High School and Academy community will join to celebrate an all-school Liturgy for Nuestra Señora Virgen de Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas. This all-school celebration of the Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe is a wonderful and significant cultural and religious experience to share with the entire student body.
As Catholics, we share a special place in our hearts and in our community for our Mother Mary. We are especially proud to share in this sacred day celebrated across Latin America and among many Latinos in the United States. On this Feast Day we venerate the Virgin Mary, through the apparitions of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
In 1529 she appeared to Juan Diego, then a 55-year-old peasant, living near present-day Mexico City. In the seven years after the apparitions, approximately eight million Aztec people converted to Catholicism.  Juan Diego was canonized as a Saint in 2002. Our Lady of Guadalupe has been honored by 25 Popes and has been formally declared Patroness and Mother of the Americas.

TOY DRIVE

Toy Drive Ends December 19

All students are asked to buy a new non-violent toy for boys and girls and bring it to school unwrapped. Toys will benefit children living in poverty who would otherwise not have a Christmas.
De La Salle students, by grade level, are divided so as to purchase for the following age groups:
Freshmen 0 - 3 years               Sophomores 4 - 7 years

Juniors 8 - 10 years                  Seniors 11 - 13 years
The agencies that benefit from the De La Salle Toy Drive ask that toys be left unwrapped and not promote any kind of violent behavior. Mr. Eidson’s Frosh Religious Studies class and Lasallian Youth continue to organize this wonderful event each Christmas season.

CAMPUS MINISTRY

In November, we celebrated the Junior Class in a Mass of Unity and Ring Ceremony, and Fr. LaSalle reminded us of the meaning of the ring--a symbol of unity, commitment, community, and beauty. On the 21st, the entire school came together to celebrate Thanksgiving in a profound prayer that highlighted the gifts of welcoming, inclusive community, gratitude and generosity.
As we enter the Advent Season, De La Salle will once again live up to our commitment to being of service.
  • We are collecting toys to donate to families who are struggling to make ends meet, in the hopes of contributing to a joyful Christmas.
  • On the December 12, we will celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, with an all school bi-lingual Mass with Mariachis. The day will begin with hot Mexican cocoa and pan dulce around the cross at 7:40 am.
Looking ahead to the New Year, we will hit the ground running when we return from the holidays with a Spring semester full of programs and activities, starting with two Kairos retreats in January.
From all of us in Campus Ministry,
we wish you a Blessed and Joyous Holiday Season of Love!
