Owl Spotlight
WAHS Senior Devan Makwana is one of our shining stars! This kid does everything, and then some. Not only was he Homecoming King, but he's a Link Leader for our 9th graders, a volleyball player, and a founding member of the ASL Club. Devan is heading to Sacramento to lobby for bills next week with the Youth & Government program of the Westchester YMCA, he's served as the youth representative on the School Site Council, he's a National Honor Society member, performs with Musical Ensemble, volunteers with the Friends of Ballona Creek, and has served on a ton of student committees. Recently, he's been admitted to a number of colleges including Chapman, LMU, CalState LA, Cal Poly Humboldt, CSUF, University of Puget Sound, and his top choice Cal Poly Pomona. And since these were early offers, he is still waiting to hear from more. His dream is to become a computer engineer, and he appreciates the deep knowledge and understanding he receives from WAHS math teacher, Dr. Branch. He loves WISH because it is a tight-knit community, the friendships are real, and the teachers are "spectacular and excited about our learning!"

In the Classroom
Ms. Avalos is a beloved English teacher often described by the students as someone who encourages kids to bring their writing to the next level, and enthusiastically brings books to life in the classroom. She has been on the WISH team for almost a decade and was a founding member of the WAHS team. Currently, the students are doing a deep dive into the non-fiction bestseller, The Other Wes Moore. She also teaches a business enterprise class called Rise. Ms. Avalos has shared that what she loves most about being an educator at WISH Academy is the strong student engagement and deep connections she gets to make with parents, students, and her colleagues.

Good Times
WISH Academy is not only about academics but we are committed to the social and emotional growth of our young people. Led by our ASB, we recently celebrated Kindness Week in a myriad of ways. Our upstanders courageously chose to be the "I" in KIND, created paper chains with uplifting messages reinforcing their united bonds, and focused on supporting their school and greater community with service learning projects. It has been exciting to see the maturity of the students and their drive to build school spirit by embracing the idea that we are better together and united as one.

Hoots Student "I've been at WISH basically my entire life! Everyone is so kind, especially the teachers--they never deny anyone help and they always provide support, connecting me to other resources. ASL is my favorite class right now. I love the subject and the culture is fantastic, and I like Ms. K as a teacher. She makes sure ASL is fun. I also really enjoy English with Ms. Phillips. We have great discussions and a good connection, and she is very enthusiastic. The teachers are all great--we're like a big family!"
--Noah H., WAHS 12th grade Student
Family
"I am the proud parent of two WISH Academy students--Summer who is in 11th grade, and Ryan who was in the first graduating class of WISH Academy in 2021! We have been at WISH since the beginning and I'm so grateful that my kids have had a rigorous academic experience, along with a commitment to art and music education throughout their years at WISH. I love that my son enjoys guitar and that my daughter shines on the volleyball team, in the musical performances, and is doing awesome on the WISH Academic Decathlon team. Our family values all people and being at WISH has given them a leg up in life."
--Alejandro Lucas, WAHS Parent
Faculty
