From Dr. Heather Alumbaugh, Vice President for Academic Life
1 May 2018 Dear Parents, Guardians, Students, and Friends of De La Salle,
As we approach the end of the 2018-2019 academic school year, I have been ruminating about Walt Whitman’s “Song of the Open Road.” It is a poem in which Whitman, the speaker poet, envisions his journey as an ongoing interplay between the open road, his body, and his soul. It seems such an appropriate poem to ponder as our students move through another transition, whether it be to college or to another grade. Whitman writes ultimately that “Wisdom is of the soul.” As we quickly approach our 2018 graduation, I have thought a lot about the concept of wisdom. We as educators approach every day at De La Salle as one in which we both instruct and learn from our students, from the “Wisdom of [their] souls.” I am struck often not only by our students’ academic, athletic, and artistic accomplishments, but also and often more so by their faith and kindness and compassion and humor and sense of fun. Every day feels like an open road where we have the wonderful opportunity to learn from each other.
To that end, it is no surprise how much we would like to celebrate our students and faculty at the end of the year.

From Mr. Mark DeMarco, President
1 May 2018
Another school year is coming to a quick close. On behalf of the administration, faculty, and staff, I want to take this opportunity to thank you for allowing us to be part of your son’s educational experience. We have many things to celebrate this year and a few things to work next year to become a great school.
As summer comes, I hope you will have some time to relax. I want to share with you the following that I read from Harvard Business Review. It is adapted from “3 Ways to Control Your Phone Addiction on Vacation,” by Regan Walsh. (My team will remind me to practice what I preach.)
I do want to share the following with you. ...

Campus Ministry
"The more fully we abandon ourselves to the care of Providence, the more attentive God is not to let us want for anything." ~ St. John Baptist de La Salle, from The Meditations
It is hard to believe that graduation is less than a month away. The De La Salle Campus Ministry is already in full preparation for the 2018-19 school year, a year that will be filled with opportunities for your sons to experience the De La Salle brotherhood and a vital faith life. We strongly encourage you to sign up to the retreats that fill up fast, especially the Senior Kairos and/or the Father/Son and Parent/Son Retreats. Click here for dates and more information. You might also want to begin thinking about your son's participation in the Ven A Ver ("Come and See") Immersion program in Salinas and/or San Diego. And don’t forget, the June 17-22, 2018 Lasallian Youth Assembly will be at the University of Portland. Parent Association Meeting Monday, May 7, 2018 7 p.m. DLS Library
Final Meeting of the Year
Our final Parent Association (PA) meeting is always a special gathering. As we continue to plan the final events of the year, we also take the time to reflect on the many volunteers and Board Chairs who have given so much back to the school. In a special way, we will thank the Board members who, like their son, are "graduating." Come join us as we wish these Senior Parents a fond farewell, and help us thank them for the countless ways they have supported the school. Lastly, we will continue to reflect on the work we did this past year and use it to help guide us next year. We encourage you to come and share your thoughts!
PLUS: Also, we are looking at our PA roster for next year. If you are interested in being a part of this incredible group of volunteers and leaders, please email Cathy Avila, DLS Parent Association President. Missed a meeting and want to catch up? Visit our home page for minutes from last month's meeting, a list of current Parent Association Board Members, and more.

Don't forget to complete the DLS Parent Survey
We welcome this opportunity to ask you for feedback about your family’s experiences in the De La Salle community—within and beyond the classroom. You can expect questions about the school’s communication with you, school culture, the counseling and student support services, and your son’s experiences with co-curricular activities. The survey should take you approximately 10-15 minutes to complete. Please note that this survey is anonymous, and your responses cannot and will not affect your son’s grades or financial aid award. We deeply appreciate your feedback and the time you take to communicate with us through this important survey.
If you have any questions, please contact Dr. Elizabeth Berkes, Director of Faculty Development and WCEA School Coordinator (berkese@dlshs.org or 925-288-8149).

Parent Survey Available through Stanford's School of Education
We have partnered with the Challenge Success project in the School of Education at Stanford University for the last four years. First, your son was invited to participate in the Survey of Adolescent School Experience in his Religious Studies class. Now, as a parent or guardian, you are being invited to participate in the Challenge Success Parent Survey. The survey looks at parents' perspectives on homework, co-curricular activities, sleep, physical health, stress, family expectations, the college admission process, and your perspectives on student wellness initiatives undertaken by De La Salle High School. The survey results are anonymous. You will not be asked to provide your name or your child's name, and you may opt out of answering any or all questions.

| Did you know?
"No matter how much faith your disciples may have, nor how lively it may be, if they are not practicing any good works at all, their faith will be of no use to them." ~St. John Baptist de La Salle, Meditations.
May 24, 1900 marks the canonization of St. John Baptist de La Salle. As we approach the end of the school year, we are ever grateful for the many women and men who show "good works" every day - who inspire us, challenge us, and support us along the way. We pray to be faithful stewards of the Lasallian tradition, and we continue to pray for more vocations in the Lasallian community. As a reminder, next year will mark the 300th anniversary of De La Salle's entry to eternal life and will be dedicated throughout the worldwide Lasallian community as the year of Lasallian Vocations: "De La Salle: One Heart, One Commitment, One Life." We will let you know of the events and ways you can support this important vocation in the upcoming months.
