Visiting Professor Kathleen Kidder Examines Truth and Falsehood in Hellenistic Poetry in New Book
From Harvard University Press and the Department of Languages Literatures and Cultures’ new visiting professor Kathleen Kidder comes Criteria of Truth: Representations of Truth and Falsehood in Hellenistic Poetry. Her book explores how one can distinguish between truth and falsehood, through a study of five Hellenistic poems dated to the third and second centuries, BCE. Aratus’s “Phaenomena,” Nicander’s “Theriaca,” Callimachus’s “Aetia,” Apollonius of Rhodes’s “Argonautica,” and Lycophron’s “Alexandra” all feature the criterion of truth. By analyzing the poems’ allusions, myths and poetic language, Kidder explains how poetry can illuminate the many dichotomous tensions of truth and falsehood, order and chaos, certainty and doubt, clarity and obscurity and more.
