Vanderbilt Students Intern
at VIGH this SummerVIGH Education and Training Team Interns Sharo Costa and Hope Wiggs, M.Ed. candidates in the International Education Policy and Management program shared their experiences interning at VIGH this summer. Their work focused on collaborating to create curricular materials, including lesson plans, presentations, and activities, as well as monitoring and evaluation tools for a mentorship program with VIGH’s partner faculty at the University of Zambia.

Dr. Fastone Goma, Appointed to ProfessorshipOur friend and colleague, Fastone Goma, M.D., Ph.D., was recently appointed to professorship of Physiology and Cardiovascular Health at the University of Zambia (UNZA) in Lusaka. VIGH faculty and staff have long enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship with colleagues from the University of Zambia School of Medicine and with its affiliated University Teaching Hospital. We are delighted to share this news. The topic of Dr. Goma's Inaugural Professorial Lecture was Exploring and Promoting Heart Health - Cell, Clinic and Community: Knowledge Translation Approaches to Cardiovascular Research. Study on Assessment of NCDs in Zambia Published by Heimburger and Colleagues A study by Doug Heimburger, M.D., M.S., VIGH Associate Director for Education and Training, and colleagues from the University of Zambia, Centre for Infectious Disease Research, and Ministry of Health in Lusaka, Zambia, was recently published in PLOS ONE: "Assessing capacity and readiness to manage NCDs in primary care setting: Gaps and opportunities based on adapted WHO PEN tool in Zambia." The goal of the study was to assess the capacity of Zambia's health system to provide NCD-related services by using the WHO recommended Essential Non-Communicable Disease Interventions (WHO PEN) tool. These results will aid in the work to address and manage NCDs in low-income settings.
