Cybersecurity month: election security |
As we enter election season, here are some key guidelines to boost your cybersecurity awareness:
Protect personal data during online voting or registration
-
Use official voting apps and websites: Only use official government or state-sanctioned platforms when registering to vote, checking your registration status or casting an absentee ballot.
| |
-
Avoid public Wi-Fi: To reduce the risk of data theft, avoid accessing voter registration websites or submitting ballots over public Wi-Fi. Instead, use a trusted network like your home Wi-Fi.
Stay informed about election security
-
Check for updates: Follow trusted agencies like the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) or local election authorities for updates on security threats and protective measures.
- Report suspicious activity: If you notice any election-related fraud or suspicious activity, report it to election officials or cybersecurity authorities.
-
Watch for misinformation: Be cautious of last-minute changes to election procedures, such as polling locations or deadlines. Always verify changes through official election sources.
Secure your online accounts and devices
-
Use strong, unique passwords: Just as you secure your work accounts, use strong, unique passwords for personal accounts. A password manager can help keep them organized and secure.
- Be aware of phishing attempts: Watch out for phishing emails or text messages that appear to offer election information or voter registration links. Avoid clicking on suspicious links and report them.
-
Keep devices updated: Ensure your phone, laptop and tablet have the latest software updates to protect against cyber-attacks.
