“Eight Approaches” Paintings Travel from MFA to our Shared Campus
“Eight Approaches” reminds viewers of side-by-side triptych paintings, narrative comic-book panels or film stills, and, of course, the eight-armed hanukkiah. Joshua Meyer, a member of Hebrew College's Arts Initiative, uses these paintings to explore our relationships to time and to light, while immersing us in the creative process. “Looking at a Meyer painting means changing your mind about what you see,” according to novelist Allegra Goodman. “Only gradually do I discern the figures in his work. They emerge slowly...coming into their own, they transform the color all around them. As living people do, Meyer’s subjects will reveal themselves, and they will disappear.”

A Calling to Ukraine and the Outdoors: The Many Paths to Rabbinical School
“Michelle Goldhaber was a fascinating prospective rabbinical student because of the richness of her experience, particularly her extensive work in Ukraine. She was concerned that pursuing the rabbinate meant narrowing what she could accomplish in the broader world beyond serving religious Jews. But she came to understand that there are different paths people take TO the rabbinate, and there are indeed different paths people take FROM the rabbinate, and that there are many rabbis who do work which crosses borders to serve many different people and she could be one of those boundary crossers.”
— Rabbi Judson, Dean & Chief Academic Officer

The Role of the Wise Heart
I vividly remember being in my third grade Jewish day school class and learning about the Omer, the ritual counting of the days between Passover and Shavuot. Perhaps I had a contrarian impulse that day, as the first thing that I remember is rolling my eyes. I assumed that counting days would be a little boring. Then my teacher taught the class a song to sing before we counted, a tune set to the Torah verses describing the omer. I loved the drama of the melody and the rhythm of the chanting. Thanks to the song, I grew excited to count the omer each morning.

Pathways to the Passover Seder
Published in March 2020, the Hebrew College Passover Companion is a collection of essays that emerged out of a desire to honor our friend and colleague, Dr. Judith Kates. Professor, author, teacher, and scholar, Kates stands among the pioneers of contemporary Jewish women reclaiming their Jewish literary heritage by bringing a feminist perspective to the interpretation of classical Jewish texts. The Passover Companion represents a unique collaboration among faculty, staff, alumni, and friends of Hebrew College. Following after the Hebrew College High Holiday Companion, it offers a pathway into another of our central ritual moments—the Passover seder. (Rachel Adelman, Jane L. Kanarek, and Gail Twersky Reimer, Editors) Order now...
