On Feb. 28, Dannette Gomez Beane, vice president for Enrollment Management and Strategic Communications, hosted “The Enrollment Forum: Starting the Long-Term Strategic Enrollment Planning (SEP) Process” via Zoom. The forum included discussion about the process to plan for enrollment stabilization within the university Strategic Plan and the next steps. It also included the opportunity for those viewing to ask questions.

Provost’s Speaker Series to explore impact of music on child development |

Radford University Director of Music Education Jennifer McDonel will present “Building Bridges Through Music: The Transformative Power of Music in Early Childhood Education and Child Development” in the next installment of the Provost’s Speaker Series on Tuesday, March 18 at 7 p.m. on the Artis Center Main Stage.
McDonel will explore the profound impact of music on early childhood development and how it strengthens connections across cognitive, emotional and social learning domains.
The Provost’s Speaker Series draws upon the expertise and experience of Radford University’s faculty members to make their research and perspectives accessible and relevant to a wide audience. Each program features a question-and-answer session and a post-event social with light refreshments provided.

Open access article publishing without the author publishing costs |
|
|
If you are planning to submit an article to a scholarly journal, check to see if University Libraries has an agreement with the publisher before submitting.
If you follow the guidelines under these agreements, you may be able to publish open access with no author publishing costs (APCs) in select journals published by Wiley, Cambridge and more, reaching a broader audience and supporting open science by allowing readers to access your article for free online.
This program is available through the Radford University Libraries’ membership in the Virginia Academic Libraries Consortium (VIVA).

Upcoming AI presentations and discussion sessions |

The AI Community of Practice invites you to four presentations and discussion sessions in March and April to help navigate the complexities of AI use in your research and teaching. Each presenter/facilitator will discuss an AI topic for 20 minutes and then open the rest of the time for questions and discussion.
The purpose of these sessions is to share knowledge and experiences, learn new things that can improve your practice, discuss timely issues and support one another. All sessions will take place in Zoom and will be recorded.

Alyssa Archer, head of Research Services at McConnell Library, will discuss the various library resources available to faculty and students to help us and our students navigate the use of AI in research, teaching and learning.

Diana Willeman-Buckelew, associate professor in the Department of Public Health and Healthcare Leadership, will share what she learned at a recent online learning consortium conference about the use of AI in online teaching and learning environments and what she is implementing and experiencing in her own online classroom.

Joanna Hunter, associate professor of Sociology, will discuss the various AI detectors available for our use, share her experiences using them and offer recommendations, tips and cautions.

The Radford University Office of Career and Talent Development will host the Spring 2025 Virginia Healthcare Professions Career Expo on Thursday, March 20, from noon to 4 p.m. in the Student Recreation and Wellness Center on the main campus in Radford.

V-TOP Highlander Works Internship Grant Program continues this summer |

The Radford University Center for Career and Talent Development will offer the V-TOP Highlander Works Internship Grant Program again this summer.
The program supports students participating in internships, and grant funds will go directly toward removing financial barriers to student participation. Requests can be funded in part or in full up to $4,000 per student.
Application submission for summer 2025 is now open and continues until March 31.

Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program’s 2026-2027 competition now open |

The Fulbright program is the U.S. government’s flagship program of international educational and cultural exchange, offering passionate and accomplished scholars in more than 160 countries the opportunity to study, teach, conduct research, exchange ideas and contribute to mutual understanding.
It offers more than 380 opportunities to choose from, but applicants can only apply for one award per year/competition cycle. Applicants can find additional guidance on applying on the Fulbright application webpage or through the Fulbright Scholar Outreach and Recruitment team. Inaugural Cultivating Character and Public Impact Pedagogy Faculty Institute coming May 12-14 |

|
The Office of Faculty Development is hosting the first annual Radford University Cultivating Character and Public Impact Pedagogy Faculty Institute from Monday, May 12, through Wednesday, May 14 (May 14 will be a half day).
Interactive workshops and collaborative activities will be held in person at Selu during this event. Facilitators from within and external to the university will help us explore:

“Wicked” problems, project-based and sustainability pedagogy.
- How to incorporate character development in our courses.
- How to successfully partner with community organizations.
|
Special guests will include Danielle Lake, director of Elon University’s Center for Design Thinking, and a panel of community leaders. The half-day of workshops on May 14 will be aimed specifically at sustainability across the curriculum.
Thanks to a grant from the Educating Character Initiative at Wake Forest University, we are able to offer a $300 stipend to teaching faculty who can attend all three days. If you are not able to attend all three days, or are AP faculty who would like to attend, please e-mail Heather Keith.
Breakfast and lunch will be provided each day, and participants will have opportunities to explore and enjoy the Selu grounds.
