 5th Year Valentines

A Message from the Consul General
Ken Okaniwa
Consul General of Japan in Miami
In January we had the great honor of presenting not one, but two awards to Floridians. The first was the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette conferred to Mr Harris Rosen for his work as the Honorary Consul in Orlando and his support to the Japanese people in the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake among others. The second was the Consul General's Commendation presented to the Association for Florida Teachers of Japanese (AFTJ) for their work in spreading the Japanese language throughout Florida.
Congratulations!
During the last month, there were several Japanese New Year events that I hope you had a chance to enjoy. To further promote people-to-people exchanges between Japan and Florida, I attended the Florida-Japan Summit in Orlando. I was also very happy to say a few words on the occasion of the Florida premiere of the Japanese film Persona Non Grata, a story about a Japanese Consul who helped Jewish people flee Europe during World War II. There will be a few more showings in other locations in the State this year.
February looks to be a great month for Japanese art. The celebrated pianist, Kotaro Fukuma will perform at the Miami International Piano Festival on the 19th. The Sogetsu School of Ikebana is celebrating its 90 years with a special event in Delray Beach on the 25th. The Morikami Museum also has a new exhibition Deco Japan: shaping art and culture in Japan 1920-1945”.

We hope to see you at these and the other wonderful events in Florida!
