Metropolitan District Names New District Manager

The Ken-Caryl Ranch Metropolitan District Board has chosen Melissa Daruna as the new District Manager. She will replace long-time District Manager Darrell Windes, who is retiring from the position at the end of the year. Melissa is currently the Recreation Director for the Metropolitan District, and she will begin her new role on Oct. 1. Darrell will stay on through the end of the year to help train and transition Melissa into the District Manager job. Starting in January, Darrell will cut back to a part-time position as the Finance Manager for the District. Thank you to Darrell for his service to the Metro District for the last 32 years. Melissa has worked in the parks and recreation field for over a decade. She is a graduate of Western Illinois University and the Illinois Centennial Honors College where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation, Park and Tourism Administration. She graduated from the John Marshall Law School in 2009. She has worked in recreation programming for KCRMD since 2010.

Bears Preparing for Hibernation: Don't Leave Out Birdfeeders or Pet Food

Bears are looking for food as they prepare for hibernation. Bears may be active anytime, day or night, but most often during morning and evening hours. Residents need to remove all attractants:
  • Remove birdfeeders until winter when bears are not active.
  • Place secured garbage cans outside for pickup in the morning only.
  • Remove pet food and birdseed containers from outside.
  • Burn food off barbeque grills and clean after each use.
  • Clean garbage cans with ammonia to discourage bears and other wildlife.
  • Don’t leave food, trash, coolers, air fresheners or anything with a scent in your vehicle.
  • Lock bear-accessible doors and windows in the house, garage and car at night.
  • Remove any ripened fruit that has fallen to the ground on your property.

Open House to Discuss Hazardous Trails Near Brannon Gearhart Park, Wood Sorrel and Buckthorn Access Trails

The Ken-Caryl Ranch Master Association Board is considering a proposal to re-route sections of hard-surface trail and rebuild low-water stream crossings in and around Brannon Gearhart Park and is seeking community input on the project. An open house will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 27 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Dakota Lodge where residents can learn details about the project. See the News Article for more information and a map of the area. If you have questions, contact Open Space Manager Sean Warren at 303-979-1876, ext. 163, or seanw@kcranch.org.
