Professor and CASL alumnus Martin Hershock is finishing up his first full year as Dean of the College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters.
In his blog, Hershock reflects on the importance of faculty-student connections. This entry is entitled, "Pomp and Circumspect."
Commencement Highlights
Life is a forever learning process, so be prepared for whatever comes your way. Lolita Hernandez, an award-winning poet and author who spent 33 years as a union autoworker, drew upon her own experience as she addressed graduates of University of Michigan-Dearborn’s College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters on Sunday, April 27.
Two CASL students, Miriam Bukhsh and Walaa Tout, were honored as Chancellor’s Medallion recipients.  The students demonstrated excellence in scholarship, leadership and service.  The Chancellor's Medallion is UM-Dearborn's most prestigious academic honor bestowed on students. CASL student Wedad Ibrahim was named the student speaker for the ceremony.
CASL faculty and students are involved in a variety of activities,
making an impact  locally, regionally and nationally.

Elevating women’s leadership in Detroit: That’s what University of Michigan-Dearborn students are doing in the Women Leadership and Social Change class, taught by Carla Vecchiola. The course, originally designed by Georgina Hickey, aims to celebrate and highlight the diversity of experiences of female leaders in the past and present.
A cracked ceramic plate lies beneath a pile of sand and sticks. To many, it’s simply garbage. To John Chenoweth, it’s a glimpse into the past.
Satori Shakoor wears plenty of hats. Writer. Playwright. Actress. Singer. She even shared the stage with the iconic George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic.
“She has all these different facets in her life, and that’s kind of what an interactive documentary is all about—exploring a subject matter by following different paths,” said Jennifer Proctor, assistant professor of journalism and screen studies (JASS) at University of Michigan-Dearborn.
You’re stuck in a traffic jam and late for a doctor’s appointment.  Or perhaps you’re supposed to give a presentation at work and your laptop crashes. Your palms begin to sweat and your heart rate rapidly increases. Walaa Tout knows the feeling. The University of Michigan-Dearborn student wanted to learn how others react to stress, so she joined graduate student Ledina Imami to ask research participants to recite a speech, then take a math test.
An abandoned building in Detroit is an eyesore for many; but to some urban artists, it’s a blank canvas. “We are an empty canvas,” said graffiti writer Freddy Diaz. “I want to give Detroit something better to look at.”
On March 28, the College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters hosted the Sargon Partners' Undergraduate Research Showcase. This event gave CASL students the opportunity to publicly demonstrate their scholarly projects and receive campus-wide recognition for their research work. Thanks to alumnus Jeff Golota ('85 B.S.) of Sargon Partners for supporting student research through this event.  Click for the abstract program and photos.
