COMMUNITY SERVICE DAY 2018

The rain held off, but for a few sprinkles, and our entire community spent today helping others. They did spring cleaning in Senior Center clients' yards, planted on the Bridge of Flowers, and cleaned in Memorial Hall in Shellburne Falls. They cleaned at the Tyler Memorial Library (Charlemont). They raked, shoveled, and cleaned at the Buckland Recreation Area and the Greenfield Recreation Area, worked in gardens with students at the INSPIRE School for Autism (Brattleboro), and worked alongside employees at Prospect Meadow Farm (Hatfield). Inspired by The Academy's founders, they made a difference everywhere they went, and in turn, they inspired gratitude and respect. Their efforts were a fitting testament to the service ethic that we value. Thanks to all!

Northampton Pride March - Saturday, May 5

This Saturday (May 5), our GSA will be participating in Northampton Pride! Pride is an annual, joyful celebration with a parade starting at 11:00 AM at Old South Street, and ending at the Three County Fairgrounds, where there will be a plethora of information, and activities. Northampton's Main Street is filled with marchers and floats, and is covered in candy and rainbow flags every year. Contact Sophia C or Sam F TONIGHT if you’d like to march with The Academy’s GSA!

The Academy is a proud sponsor of Northampton Pride, and will have an information table under the tent at the Fairgrounds. Come say hello!

SENIOR INDEPENDENT PROJECTS 2018

As our seniors are working to complete their projects by presenting, discussing, and defending their conclusions and reflections with a triad of teachers and community members, the have each written abstracts to summarize and introduce us all to their work. These can be found HERE and full project books will be archived in our library.

Mass MoCA 8th Annual Teen Invitational Opening: Friday May 11, 7:00 PM

The much anticipated moment has arrived! All Academy students in grades 8-12 have been invited to submit a piece of artwork for exhibition (and consideration for awards) in Mass MoCA's 8th Annual Teen Invitational, and many are seizing the opportunity! Students from schools across the greater North Adams area are participating, and the evening of Friday, May 11 will see not just the opening of the short-lived exhibition, but also an awards ceremony and reception. The show will remain up through closing on Sunday, May 12, and all work will be returned the following week. If you are unable to attend the opening, but will be able to go during the weekend, please let Nora Bates Zale know, as she can provide two admissions vouchers per student. If you are able to attend the opening but require transportation to and from The Academy, please let Mrs. BZ know that as well.

PLEASE NOTE: SPECIAL SCHEDULE, MAY 16

On May 16th, there will be a half-day of classes, ending at 12:15, before students depart for various athletic activities. However, buses will still run from The Academy at 5:15 PM. Kayakers, lacrosse players, and middle school Ultimate players will be able to ride these buses, but Varsity and JV Ultimate teams will not be back from Greenfield Community College in time for the buses. The RVAL tournament at GCC should wrap-up around 6 PM. Please plan accordingly for this day.

SPORT RECAP, Week of April 30-May 4

The JV Ultimate team lost a close game to PVCICS 7-6 on Tuesday and fell to Buxton 12-4 on Wednesday despite playing one of the stronger games of the season. Sylvie M, Elaina G-B, Kathleen S, Raymond M, Claire G, Calla J, Tor O, Lila G, and Julen P all contributed to the scoring this week, and the team showed an all-around great effort in both games.

Our varsity Ultimate team came back from an early 4-0 deficit to play Hartsbrook fairly evenly for the rest of the game before "ultimately" losing 10-4.  Nat B-O scored two times and made several great plays on defense. Hendrick P and Liam F contributed a goal apiece and Izzy B had a strong all-around game. Hartsbrook showed a lot of patience on offense, completing 33 straight passes during one long possession.

The middle school team lost to Hartsbrook 15-0 on Tuesday. The team worked on its zone defense and, despite the score, demonstrated significant growth from its first encounter with Hartsbrook's strong team.
After a stimulating 45-minute bus ride discussion about how they would survive if they were the last human beings on Earth, the middle school Ultimate team carried that energy into their game against the Hilltown Cooperative Charter Public School, winning 15-2. Eleven different players scored goals in the victory, led by Anna P-C, who had three, and Juliet C, with two. Ruby C added four assists to her two goals, and Nick F had three assists and a score in the victory against a nice group of opponents.

The girls lacrosse team defeated Miss Hall's JV 9-2 on Wednesday. The Academy passed the ball well and played great team defense. Emma F had a particularly strong game with 4 goals.

NEWS FROM THE ACADEMY PARENTS COUNCIL (APC)

Over the next several weeks there are plenty of opportunities to get together with other Academy parents for community building and to help out at our school. For those of you that were not able to make the April 3rd APC meeting, notes are HERE. Thanks to David Howe for hosting us at the Greenfield Savings Bank conference room.

Save the Dates!

Tuesday May 15, 5:30-7:00 PM:  Community Pot Luck Dinner and Cuba Trip presentation
All community members are invited to dine and enjoy photos and brief presentations from the Cuba travelers.  Please bring a salad, entree or dessert to share.  Please RSVP by May 11 to your class parent if you "think" you may come (including how many people) so we have a sense of numbers to help us with planning and set up. We could use a few people to set up and/or clean up (main tasks are wiping down tables, putting up chairs and washing silverware). Contact Diane Bigelow  if you have 30 minutes to spare that evening from 5-5:30 or 7-7:30.

Saturday May 26, 9:00 - 10 AM: Final APC meeting of the year
Saturday May 26, 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM:  Community Work Bee
Help beautify the school in advance of graduation. Be on the look out for correspondence from Phoebe Walker regarding job sign up. Come for a few hours or come for the whole day. We have great fun working and chatting. Lunch will be served. Meeting agenda will follow, but given that it will be brief, we will likely cover spending ideas (see 4/3/18 notes for more details), co-chair leadership transition, and June events.

Tuesday June 12, exact time TBA): APC-Sponsored Staff Appreciation Luncheon
This is the final opportunity of the year to celebrate Academy faculty and staff. Be on the look out for communication from organizers Jodi Howe and Meg Clark as June approaches.

ACADEMY ARTIST AT WORK

Inspired by the work of Jose Fuster in Havana, Gwen H participated in the Greenfield Recreation Department’s parking meter beautification project in celebration of Mass ArtWeek. Look for “her” parking meter as they are installed!

URGENT - ERDING-CHARLEMONT EXCHANGE 2018:

We are looking for two Academy students and families interested in hosting two 10th graders from Erding, Germany, during the fall of 2018. Erding students visit us every year as part of the longstanding Erding-Charlemont Exchange. The American host students then have a chance – if interested – to go to Germany the following summer. The host families on both sides of the Atlantic are expected to provide room and board and are expected to show the student around the region. There is a $500 family stipend available to help defray related expenses. The Erding students will be here next fall from approximately October 22 to December 22.

Please take a look at the two brief bios of Charlotte and Marius and discuss this wonderful opportunity with your family. FYI: While preference is given to rising 10th graders, Academy hosts do not have to be in 10th grade.

To learn more about the Erding-Charlemont Exchange in general, please click here. Contact Sabine Mauri if interested.

ANNUAL FUND 2018

With three months to go until the end of our fiscal year, we're a little over halfway to our Annual Fund Goal of $250,000. 100% of our faculty and staff members have donated to this year's fund and 100% participation by parents will be a strong statement of appreciation for them and for our program. If you haven't yet made your gift or your pledge, please do so here. Parents, we're currently at a 72% participation rate, and every gift matters, every day. Thank you for your generosity.
