Dear Nazareth community,

I write to provide some clarification for the Nazareth campus in light of the new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations announced today about wearing masks indoors.
  • This recommendation does not currently affect Nazareth College. It is intended for areas of substantial and high COVID-19 transmission rates. “High” is defined by the CDC as more than 100 positive COVID cases per 100,000 residents over a seven-day period; “substantial” is defined as 50 to 100 cases per 100,000 residents over seven days. Here in Monroe County, the current rate of infection is 4.4 cases per 100,000. Monroe County data are tracked online.
  • The recommended school guidance provided to date is for K-12 schools only.
  • The CDC reinforced the importance of vaccination as data indicate its effectiveness against severe symptoms, disease, and death. Nazareth requires students, staff, and faculty to document COVID-19 vaccination or have received an exemption by this Saturday, July 31.
  • Students at clinicals, teaching placements, and experiential learning sites must adhere to site-specific policies, as usual.
  • For the 2021-2022 academic year, Nazareth is requiring unvaccinated individuals with approved exemptions to wear masks indoors, as well as whenever social distancing is not possible outdoors.
  • Our community will demonstrate respect and care for all individuals and we will respect anyone’s personal choice to wear a mask.
  • We will closely monitor our campus and regional area COVID levels and indicators.
We will continue to keep our community updated. I am grateful for your collaboration in caring for the health and safety of our community.

Sincerely,

Beth Paul, Ph.D.
