FDA Expands Access to Breakthrough Duchenne Treatment |

The FDA recently expanded its approval of Elevidys, a potentially life-saving treatment for Duchenne muscular dystrophy, to include children ages 4 and older, regardless of their ambulatory status.
Led by Director of Neurology Dr. Crystal Proud, CHKD was one of four centers in the nation selected to study and administer Elevidys and was the first Virginia children's hospital to administer the treatment to a patient.

CAR-T Treatment Now Offered at CHKD
|
CHKD has received approval to provide an exciting new treatment for children with certain types of cancer. CAR-T cell therapy is a breakthrough treatment where a patient’s own immune cells (T cells) are modified to improve their ability to locate and kill cancer cells. Kymriah, the treatment used by CHKD, is currently approved for patients, up to age 25, with B cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) who did not respond to chemotherapy or whose leukemia has come back.

Eric Lowe, MD, Named CHKD's Chief Clinical Academic Officer and Chair of Pediatrics at Medical School

Dr. Eric Lowe, medical director of pediatric oncology, has been selected as chief clinical academic officer at CHKD and chair of pediatrics at Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University. His appointment will be effective September 1, 2024.
In his new role, Dr. Lowe will oversee clinical academic and research activities throughout CHKD Health System. He will also continue to care for patients at CHKD and as CHKD’s principal investigator in the Children’s Oncology Group, a global collaborative for pediatric and adolescent cancer research.

1.5T MRI Refurbishment Plan Update
|
The 1.5T fixed MRI scanner at the main hospital will be refurbished from August 12 to December 2, 2024. This refurbishment will include upgrades in hardware, software, and Faraday cage replacement to improve reliability and image quality.
During this downtime, the current 1.5 mobile MRI from Oyster Point/Concert Drive will be moved to the main hospital campus. Sedation services will still be offered for eligible patients at the main hospital.

Introducing Caitlin Peterson, DO, Nephrology
|
Meet Caitlin Peterson, DO, a recent addition to Children's Specialty Group's nephrology practice at CHKD.
Dr. Peterson attended medical school at Midwestern University in Arizona. She completed her residency at Riley Children's Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana, and a fellowship in her hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.
Her clinical interests include kidney transplants, chronic kidney disease, hypertension, quality improvement, and adolescent transition to adult healthcare.
