At the Blue-Gold Game, nearly 160 South Bend primary and middle school students were treated to some of the best seats in the bowl and some VIP treatment, even getting a pre-game visit with Coach Marcus Freeman, photo opportunities with Notre Dame Leprechaun Kylee Kazenski and appearances on the stadium’s video board. Most of the kids attend Wilson and Coquillard elementary schools, which are part of the South Bend Empowerment Zone. There was also a group of young men who are part of the 100 Black Men of Greater South Bend Freedman Academy Leadership Program.

The pair met with University leaders, faculty, and students and discussed how research and innovation can drive better policymaking, grow the local economy, and contribute to national security. South Bend Mayor James Mueller and Chief Innovation Officer Denise Linn Riedl joined Notre Dame Wireless Institute co-directors Nicholas Laneman and Bertrand Hochwald to discuss how researchers are working with the city to enhance the region's innovation ecosystem.

Center for Civic Innovation joins Lucy Family Institute to foster data-driven advancements in South Bend communities |
Notre Dame's Center for Civic Innovation (CCI) is strengthening its connection to applied research by merging with Notre Dame’s Lucy Family Institute for Data & Society. Now known as the Lucy Civic Innovation Lab, the merger will allow the center to expand existing research and education opportunities and enhance its data-driven approach to increasing the region’s civic engagement.

Statewide exhibit to explore pivotal 1920s clash between Notre Dame students, Klan |
One hundred years ago, Notre Dame students marched into downtown South Bend to confront the Ku Klux Klan, leading to an exchange of words and fists and marking a pivotal moment in Indiana history. This month, “RESIST!,” presented by Notre Dame, opened on Saturday (April 13) and runs through Aug. 2, 2025, at the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center in Indianapolis. A “sister” exhibit, presented with support from The History Museum, will open May 17 and run through Oct. 13 at the St. Joe County Public Library in South Bend.

Contributions of Black players in baseball being celebrated |
CBS Saturday Morning featured community members, along with Notre Dame students and faculty, who are uncovering the legacy of South Bend's underrepresented baseball teams. Scheduled to open this summer, Foundry Field is a new public-access baseball field in Southeast Park and a collaborative community project led by the Sappy Moffitt Field Foundation, the University of Notre Dame’s Center for Social Concerns, the Indiana University South Bend Civil Rights Heritage Center, and South Bend Venues Parks and Arts.
