Dear Partner in Ministry,

After Easter, we enter a period in the Christian liturgical calendar known as Eastertide. On the fortieth day after Easter (Easter Sunday is day 1), always on a Thursday, the church celebrates Ascension Day. This is the day when Jesus ascends into heaven and sits on the right hand of God the Father Almighty (to cite the creed). The Sunday after Ascension Day is Ascension Sunday. The following Sunday, the fiftieth day of Easter, is Pentecost, when we remember the remarkable story found in Acts 2 (check it out if you don’t know it).

For many churches, this marks the conclusion of the Christian Year. But there’s actually one more week before we move into what’s known as Ordinary Time (the Sundays between the end of the Liturgical Year and Advent). Trinity Sunday. That’s right—the doctrine of the Trinity is so important that it gets its own Sunday.

The doctrine of the Trinity is one of the most central beliefs of the Christian faith. It has historically been the primary way in which the Church has identified its understanding of God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit and the relationship between them. However, this teaching has also been one of the most debated, controversial, and misunderstood ideas in Christian history. It has been conceived in a variety of ways, producing heated debate and conflict among scholars and theologians. Meanwhile, most of the people in the church have little idea about the Trinity and might be excused for wondering what all the fuss is about.

In Adult Education in May, we will explore the historical development of the Trinity in relation to the scripture, Christian tradition, and cultural assumptions. Along the way, we’ll examine alternative models of the Trinity as well as the practical and spiritual significance of these ideas for Christian faith. Through our time together, we’ll grow in our knowledge of scripture, our understanding of theology, and our appreciation for the diversity of the Christian tradition, as well as the majesty and mystery of our faith. This is a great way to get ready for Trinity Sunday on May 31 this year.

We’ll meet this Sunday (May 10) and next (May 17) in the Washington Room at 9:45am.
John
